Abstract
1484427 Battery stopper with catalyst for recombining gases VARTA BATTERIE AG 5 Sept 1975 [5 Sept 1974] 36759/75 Heading H1S A stopper, for insertion in a filler hole of a lead-acid storage battery, comprises a housing having a metal cover and a laminar support disposed within the housing in thermally-conducting contact with the metal cover, the laminar support carrying a catalyst for the recombination of gases evolved during operation of the battery. As shown, a stopper comprises a housing 1, e.g. of plastics, having fins 8 and a cover 7 of metal, e.g. stainless steel. A catalyst 6, e.g. of Pd impregnated into water-repellant asbestos cloth, is held in thermal contact with cover 7 by spring clips 11; a catalyst 5, e.g. of CuO impregnated into asbestos, for removal of SbH 3 may overlie catalyst 6. A funnel 4 serves to distribute gases over the catalyst, and a labyrinth 3 prevents wetting of the catalyst by electrolyte; water formed by combination of H 2 and O 2 returns to the battery by hole 9; hole 10 is a pressure-release orifice.
