Abstract

Sintered magnetic bodies are produced by extruding through a die in which there is a direct continuous or pulsed magnetic field a mixture of magnetic particles and a binder, then applying a second, reverse, magnetic field in the die to demagnetize the body before it leaves the extruder, and then cutting the extruded product as required, and sintering. Both magnetic fields may be produced by the same magnetic circuit, and the second is smaller than the first. A suitable material is barium ferrite (prepared e.g. by calcining at 1300‹ C. a mixture of BaCO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 containing a little SiO 2 and PbO) in cereal flour and methyl cellulose. The fields may be in any direction, and the first is at least 3000 Oersted, and preferably 6000 Oersted, and the second 2000 Oersted. The properties of a magnet made in this way were: B rem = 2800 Gauss; Hc = 2200 Oersted; B.H max = 1À7 x 10<SP>6</SP> Gauss. Oersted.
