Abstract

[Also in Division H1] A sealed magnetic contact unit 1 is closed when a condenser 3 is discharged through a control winding Yh on closure of a switch 5 in the control circuit, provided a winding X is already in the operative state. The winding X is a short-circuited winding which is energized by transformer action when the winding Yh is energized. If only one winding is energized the flux passes round the ring core 2 and not through the contact unit. The contact unit may be maintained closed by the continuous excitation of winding Yh as shown, or by a separate holding winding. A plurality of relays operated in the above manner may be employed in a coupling matrix (Fig. 2, not shown). In Fig. 3 (not shown), the contact unit comprises a magnetic reed contact 9 secured to the base of a C-shaped core 7 and movable between the polepieces of the core which also act as fixed contacts. The contacts are again enclosed in a sealed container and the winding Yh, which is energized by discharge of a capacitor 11 as before, surrounds the container whilst the winding X surrounds the core. A plurality of relays of this type may be used in a coupling matrix (Fig. 4, not shown).
