A voltage regulator for a short wound generator 11, e.g. an alternator with a rectified output, having output leads 12, 13 comprises a contact arm 17 which has a double contact thereon and which is movable such that in a first position a first portion 22 of the double contact engages a back contact 23 for energizing the field winding 15 and in a second position the second portion 25 of the double contact engages a fixed contact 26 to short-circuit the field winding 15 which, when the arm 17 is in a position intermediate the contacts 23, 26, receives energizing current from lead 12 by way of a p.t.c. resistor 28. A choke 16 is connected as shown in the circuit between the arm 17 and the field winding 15, and the arm oscillates continuously in known manner, under the control of a regulator coil 19, between its various switching positions so that the output voltage on leads 12, 13 is maintained constant. The Specification gives preferred values for the p.t.c. resistor 28 and choke 16, and specifies suitable materials for the contacts 22, 23, 25 and 26.
