Abstract

1,205,594. Hydrogenating copolymers. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 6 Oct., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 45836/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] A mixture of butadiene, styrene, tetrahydrofuran (as a randomizing agent) and secondary butyllithium in cyclohexane is polymerized for 2 hours at 122‹ F. The polymer solution formed is hydrogenated, to remove acyclic unsaturation whilst retaining aromatic unsaturation, by contacting with hydrogen at 400 psig for 2 hours at 350‹ F. using a catalyst comprising nickel octoate solution and triethylaluminium. Block copolymers may be obtained by omitting the randomizing agent.
