Abstract

A mixture of butadiene, styrene, tetrahydrofuran (as a randomizing agent) and secondary butyllithium in cyclohexane is polymerized for 2 hours at 122 F. The polymer solution formed is hydrogenated, to remove acyclic unsaturation whilst retaining aromatic unsaturation, by contacting with hydrogen at 400 psig for 2 hours at 350 F. using a catalyst comprising nickel octoate solution and triethylaluminium. Block copolymers may be obtained by omitting the randomizing agent.
