Abstract
1,100,543. Ski bindings. H. MARKER. 16 March, 1965 [16 March, 1964; 20 March, 1964], No. 11144/65. Heading A6D. A safety ski binding of the type comprising tension cables 1 extending forwardly from the rear of a ski boot in position on the ski, comprises a heel release mechanism in the form of an abutment member 21 which is spring-urged into contact with the heel of the boot, the line of contact lying below the level of the tension cables when the binding is operative and being brought above said level to release the binding when the heel of the boot is raised relative to the ski. As shown in Fig. 1, the abutment member 21 is mounted in a saddle member whose bridge piece 17 is screwed on to a cylindrical casing 16 containing a compression spring 14 and a central shaft 10 fixed to a shaft 6 which is pivotally mounted between the ends of the tension cables. Rollers on the shaft 6 are arranged to ride over cam surfaces 25 on the saddle arms 19. Thus in the event of the boot heel being lifted from the surface of the ski, the member 21 is lifted above the level of the tension cables 1, which latter then act in conjunction with the spring 14 to bring the release device to the position illustrated in broken lines in Fig. 1, and the binding is re-engaged by placing the member 21 in abutment with the heel of the boot and swinging the member 16 upwardly to bring the device over-centre relative to the shaft 6. In alternative embodiments (not shown) the abutment member comprises a pivotable cam normally spring-urged into engagement with the heel of the boot and arranged to pivot to release the heel when the latter rises to bring the line of contact between the heel and the cam member above the level of the tension cables. An embodiment is described in which a tension spring replaces the compression spring.
