Abstract

A rope or electric cable has a centre filament forming the core of the rope or the eletrical conductor which is surrounded by a composite structure of bonded textile yarns all arranged substantially parallel to the centre filament and an external envelope bonded to said yarns, the breaking strength of the elongation at break of the centre filament being greater than that of the composite structure so that the composite structure will always break before the centre filament. The centre filament for a conductor may be stranded or unstranded, or be of a cellular nature or be coated in a spongy material to give the cable buoyancy. For a rope a steel core may be used. The textile yarns of the composite structure may be natural or artificial fibres, the latter may be polyethylene terephthalate or materials based upon polyamides, polyesters, polyolefines, polyacryls and polyvinyls, and are binded together with rubber latex, vinyl or other polymers, polycondensates, paraffins and waxes which contain protecting and/or stabilizing agents, fungicides or fire-proofing products. The external envelope on the composite structure may be a wrapping or braiding of polyethylene terephthalate or polyhexamethylene adipamide yarns and coated with abrasion resistant resin such as polyvinyl chloride, elastomers, polyamides and polytetrafluoroethylenes.
