A container device into which a quantity of cigarettes are dispensed from a store and in which the cigarettes are collected and retained so that during transport and insertion into a packet they adopt the positions they occupy in the finished packet, includes two plates arranged parallel to one another, plate 1 comprising a bottom plate and plate 12 a cover, and walls arranged between the plates in the longitudinal direction of the cigarettes and is characterized in that the walls are in the form of jaws 2 presenting opposing abutment surfaces and movably arranged on shafts 5 mounted in grooves 6 and 18 disposed in the bottom plate 1 and the the cover 12 respectively, the shafts 5 being adapted to be moved in a transverse direction by means of a lever 7 mounted on the bottom plate 1 and links 10, 11 between the lever 7 and the shafts 5. The lever 7 is actuated by a roller 9 at one end contacting an abutment as the device moves towards a cigarette storing position so that the jaws are moved apart. The rear ends of the jaws come into abutment with studs 13 and cause the jaws to pivot on shafts 5 so that the front portions of the jaws move further apart to further facilitate the insertion of cigarettes. Movement of the jaws also causes, through cam surfaces 19, 20, the cover-plate 12 to be tilted upwards at its front end to allow the insertion of the cigarettes. The leading edges of the jaws and the bottom and cover plates may be chamfered to further assist the insertion of cigarettes. The cigarettes may be arranged in rows and the number of cigarettes in one row may deviate from the number in remaining rows and to allow for this the abutment surfaces of jaws 2 may be formed with a bulge 4. After the cigarettes have been inserted into the device, actuation of roller 9 ceases and the jaws 2 and cover-plate 12 return to their original positions under the action of springs 21 and 15, respectively. The device with the cigarettes therein is then moved to a position where the cigarettes are inserted into a packet. The device is preferably mounted on a chain by means of studs 22 for movement to the various operating positions.
