Abstract
o -Lactams are produced by reacting a cycloalkanecarboxylic acid with a nitrosyl compound NOX, where X is an acid group, radical or cation, in the presence of boron trifluoride and/or a complex compound obtainable by reaction of a nitrosyl compound with boron trifluoride. The acid may be in molten condition or in solution and used in stoichiometric excess relative to the nitrosyl compound. Any unreacted acid is removed by distillation and the lactam is recovered by solvent extraction. The boron trifluoride is recovered by passing in ammonia and separatang and decomposing the solid ammonia -boron trifluoride complex formed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 940,255.
