A product which may be used in the treatment of antiviral infections, is obtained by reacting ascorbic acid with formaldehyde or a compound yielding formaldehyde, by heating in aqueous solution. Examples are given. An antiviral composition comprises the above reaction product together with an inert carrier or diluent.
