Przedmiotem zgłoszenia jest sposób otrzymywania γ-hutyrolaktonu, będącego cyklicznym estrem kwasu 4-hydroksymasłowego, przedstawionego wzorem 1, określanego skrótowo GBL, z 1,4-butanodiolu, znajdującego szerokie zastosowanie w przemyśle chemicznym, petrochemicznym, czy też farmaceutycznym.
