PLIt is known that the saponification of esters is usually carried out with oxides or hydroxides of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals. The invention is based on the fact that the saponification of esters, in particular ethyl acetate, is carried out by a method even suitable for the preparation of factory, if instead of the above-mentioned oxides, some metallic oxides, for example PbO, are used, which, while playing the role of an acid element (e.g. sodium lead), will replace the alkali in a given case. Saponification of ethyl acetate with lead oxide is cheap, fast and complete. Lead acetate is formed and ethyl alcohol is released, which can be reused. Lead oxide derived from alkaline lead or an oxide derived directly from minerals may be used for the reaction. Instead of ethyl acetate, obtained from free acetic acid, any other ester obtained from crude acetic acid or other acetic acid containing liquids can be treated. It is also possible to saponify formates, propionates, ethyl butyrates or esters of ethyl alcohol homologues prepared in the same way. The reaction is very simple. It is enough to slightly heat a mixture of ethyl acetate, e.g. water and lead oxide, to initiate the reaction. The reaction takes place only without heating, the mass should be cooled even at the end of the operation. PL
