Abstract

An object of the invention is to efficiently recover a high-purity target gas while avoiding influences from impurities that could deteriorate a purifying capability of an adsorbent, when a pressure swing adsorption method is used to purify a gas containing a target component to obtain a target gas from the gas mixture. A method of the invention repeats a cycle of pressure swing adsorption in a plurality of adsorption units each loaded with an adsorbent for selectively adsorbing the impurity components, and the cycle includes an adsorption step of introducing the gas mixture into the adsorption unit under a relatively elevated pressure to cause the adsorbent to adsorb the impurity components present in the gas mixture while discharging a gas, which contains an increased percentage of the target component, from the adsorption unit. The cycle also includes a decompression step of reducing pressure inside the adsorption unit while discharging a gas from the adsorption unit. Each adsorption unit includes a first adsorption column and a second adsorption column (10A-10D, 20A-20D). The first and second adsorption columns are connected in series. An on-off valve (16) provided between the first adsorption column and the second adsorption column switches in the decompression step between a state in which the first and second adsorption columns communicate with each other and another state in which the first and second adsorption columns do not communicate with each other.
