Description
The present invention relates to a skin care agent (skin cream) in the form of an emulsion, in which the emulsion emulsion (III) is made up of two other emulsions, emulsion I and emulsion II, where emulsion I is a water-in-oil emulsion without omega-3 fatty acids and emulsion II is an oil-in-water emulsion with omega-3 fatty acids, and where part of the oil in emulsion II is carried out by omega-3 fatty acids which are prevented from oxidizing. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for producing such a skin care agent, as well as its use.
In Norway, there is a long tradition of using cod liver oil as a dietary supplement, especially because cod liver oil is considered to be a valuable source of vitamins. In recent times, however, people have increasingly become aware of the important role of fish oils as a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (Dyrberg et al., Lancet ii, 117-119, 1978), and fish oil is now considered to be the best source of the so-called omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3; fatty acids where the last double bond is located at the third last carbon atom in the carbon chain). Research has shown that these fatty acids reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and that they have a positive effect on children's development.
It has long been known that cod liver oil has a healing effect on various types of skin disorders. Recent research has shown that it is the omega-3 fatty acids in cod liver oil that contribute to this, without the mechanism(s) of action being mapped. In the body, omega-3 fatty acids are used, among other things, for membrane building, and they are known to have a beneficial effect on the skin and to be anti-inflammatory.
A problem with using omega-3 fatty acids in skin care products/creams has, however, been that they develop an inevitable rancid cod liver odor upon oxidation, and such use has therefore not been attempted to any great extent.
A patent application which, however, describes the use of omega-3 fatty acids in a skin care agent is NO-A-19980711 which deals with a skin care agent which requires that urea (urea) is present in the agent. According to the patent, the purpose of the invention is to exploit the use of the carbamide in skin care products. This is achieved according to claim 1 by carbamide enclosing fatty acids and/or fatty acid compounds in such a way that the fat in the skin care cream is made available, while at the same time protecting it from oxidation. However, as already mentioned, such a product is entirely dependent on carbamide being present in the composition. In addition, it is stated in patent application NO-A-19980711 (page 4) that the method described leads to only about half of the omega-3 fatty acids being enclosed in such a mixture with carbamide, which probably means that not all omega- The 3-fatty acids present are protected from oxidation.
Furthermore, US patent no. 5,985,177 describes a multiple emulsion which can prevent oxidation of the oil-soluble compounds in the emulsion. In more detail, the oxidation inhibition is achieved by using a clay that separates the water droplets in the emulsion from each other. The clay thus prevents the mixing of the inner and outer oil phase and thereby protects the inner oil phase from oxidation. The emulsion described in US 5,985,177 has no added antioxidants. C. Laugel et al. (1998), International Journal o/ Cosmetic Science, 20, 183-191 deals with a multiple emulsion containing triterpene derivatives for stimulating the total collagen synthesis in fibroblasts in the skin, and where the study includes investigations of whether the triterpene derivatives are protected against oxidation in the indicated the emulsion. The emulsion described by C. Laugel et al. (1998), supra, does not contain fatty acids, such as, for example, omega-3 fatty acids.
In Gallarate et al. (1999), International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 188, 233-241, it is described how to avoid oxidative degradation of vitamin C by isolating this in an inner oil phase in an oil-in-water emulsion.
In US patent no. 6,419,900, a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion is described which prevents oxidation of specified components by isolating them in a phase so that they are not available for oxidation.
US Patent No. 5,935,588 also includes a water-in-oil-in-water triple emulsion that protects the active ingredients from degradation.
However, there are no known suitable skin care products containing omega-3 fatty acids that are sufficiently protected against oxidation.
It is therefore an aim of the present invention to provide a skin care agent (skin cream) which comprises fatty acids, especially omega-3 fatty acids, which are protected against oxidation, so that the skin cream does not smell after being applied to the skin. It is further an aim to provide a skin cream with a much higher content of omega-3 fatty acids than has been done previously, but still without the product oxidizing and developing a rancid smell, as well as a method for producing such a product and application thereof.
These purposes have been achieved with the present invention, characterized by what appears in the attached claims.
The present invention therefore relates to a skin care agent (skin cream) which, among other things, comprises unsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids), and which is produced in such a way that the omega-3 fatty acids do not oxidize, even after application to the skin. This is achieved by mixing two emulsions where one is a water-in-oil emulsion (emulsion I) without omega-3 fatty acids, and the other is an oil-in-water emulsion (emulsion II) with omega-3 - fatty acids. A new type of emulsion (emulsion III) is then produced which will be a water-in-oil emulsion. Without the mechanism of action being experimentally proven, and without having to commit to a specific theory, it is the inventor's opinion that the omega-3 fatty acids in this new emulsion
(emulsion III) are protected against oxidation by being located in the center of small water particles, which in turn are surrounded by/are dispersed in the homogeneous and continuous lipid phase from emulsion I, so that rancidity of the product does not occur.
The invention will now be described in more detail, with reference to figures and examples.
Figure 1 The figure shows emulsion III, which is a water-in-oil emulsion. The water in the emulsion is in the form of a dispersed phase (droplets) 2, 3, which is in a continuous lipid phase 1. Around 15% of the water particles originate from emulsion II 3, and contain omega-3 fatty acids 4.
In order to produce a skin care agent (skin cream) with omega-3 fatty acids that do not oxidize, so that a rancid cod liver oil smell can be avoided, according to the present invention, an emulsion (emulsion III) has been produced by mixing together two other emulsions (emulsion I and emulsion II).
Emulsion I is a water-in-oil emulsion, e.g. a skin cream, which does not contain omega-3 fatty acids, and where the lipid content is relatively low, i.e. 15-20%, preferably 17%. The water phase in this emulsion makes up from 80-85%, preferably 83%.
Emulsion II is an oil-in-water emulsion where the oil makes up from 66-80%, preferably 80%, while the water phase makes up from 20-34%, preferably 20%. The oil phase in the emulsion consists of marine oils or concentrates or mixtures thereof, or a mixture of marine oils and plant oils. Cod liver oil is preferably used as marine oil, and more preferably omega-3 fatty acids. If the oil is fish oil, the content of omega-3 fatty acids in the fish oil can be from 10-85%, preferably 20-60%, and more preferably 40%. The high oil content gives such an emulsion a high viscosity, which seems to contribute to the polyunsaturated fatty acids not autoxidizing.
(80-90):(20-10), fortrinnsvis i forholdet 85:15. To prepare a new type of skin cream according to the present invention, emulsion I and emulsion II can be mixed in a given ratio, e.g. in a ratio of (80-90):(20-10), preferably in the ratio 85:15. The two emulsions are mixed by adding emulsion II to emulsion I at room temperature, after which the whole is carefully stirred together, preferably without access to air, until a visible homogeneity occurs. A new emulsion called emulsion III then appears, which will be a water-in-oil emulsion (Figure 1). In emulsion III, the oil phase from emulsion I will form a homogeneous and continuous lipid phase 1. The water in emulsion III will be dispersed in the continuous lipid phase in the form of small droplets 2, 3, and is consequently prevented from coming into contact with each other. A predominant part of the droplets 2 is water from emulsion I. The droplets 3 originating from emulsion II make up a significantly smaller part of emulsion III as a result of the mixing ratio, and the fatty acids 4 from emulsion II are located inside these 3 water droplets, and are in according to the inventor thus prevented from oxidizing. The lipid phases in emulsion I and II are incompatible, and therefore have no possibility of forming a homogeneous lipid phase. As far as the inventor knows, such an emulsion has not previously been described.
In the following, the invention will be explained in more detail with the help of examples.
EKSEMPLER EXAMPLES
Eksempel 1 Example 1
The example illustrates a skin care agent according to the present invention which contains omega-3 fatty acids.
The production of such a skin care product takes place in the following way: (i) a skin cream is first produced in the form of a water-in-oil emulsion (emulsion I) which does not contain omega-3 fatty acids, and where the ratio between lipid and water phase are respectively 17 and 83%; (ii) an oil-in-water emulsion (emulsion II) is produced where the oil consists of fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids, and where the ratio between lipid and water phase is respectively 80 and 20%; (iii) emulsion I and emulsion II are mixed together by gentle stirring.
Eksempel 2 Example 2
The example illustrates a skin care agent according to the present invention which contains omega-3 fatty acids.
Det fremstilles en emulsjon I (hudkrem; Hudpleiekrem, ScanHall A.s) som nevnt i eksempel 1, der hudkremen består av ca. 83% renset vann samt følgende komponenter: stearinsyre, palmitinsyre, isopropylen myristat, propylen glycol, ceryl alkohol, glycol distearat, polysorbat 80, cetyl acetat, acetylat lanolin alkohol, stearyl alkohol, alkohol denat, trietanolamin, metylparben, tocoferyl acetat, melkesyre, propyl paraben, parfyme, allantoin og polyetylenglykol-40 hydrogenert lakserolje. An emulsion I (skin cream; Hudpleiekrem, ScanHall A.s) is prepared as mentioned in example 1, where the skin cream consists of approx. 83% purified water and the following components: stearic acid, palmitic acid, isopropylene myristate, propylene glycol, ceryl alcohol, glycol distearate, polysorbate 80, cetyl acetate, acetylated lanolin alcohol, stearyl alcohol, alcohol denat, triethanolamine, methyl parbene, tocopheryl acetate, lactic acid, propyl paraben, perfume, allantoin and polyethylene glycol-40 hydrogenated castor oil.
Furthermore, an oil-in-water emulsion with a paste-like viscosity is used as emulsion II. This product has not been in contact with air during manufacture, so that no oxidation of the fish oil in the product has taken place. This emulsion also contains vitamins E and C, which act as antioxidants and play an important role in the defense against free radicals. Emulsion II (Coromar™, ScanHall A.s) contains fish oil with 40% omega-3 fatty acids, in addition to water, eggs, vitamins (ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, folic acid), aroma (vanillin), preservative (potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate), sweetener (acesulfame K, sodium cyclamate, sodium saccharinate), acidity regulator (citric acid), stabilizer (guar gum, xanthan gum) and beta-carotene).
Eksempel 3 Example 3
A skin care agent as indicated in example 2 was tested for odor after application to the skin.
Five people smeared their hands with the skin care product, and even after 5-8 hours no rancid cod liver oil smell had developed. This is because the fatty acids/fish oil in the cream are prevented from oxidizing, despite the fact that the amount of fish oil added to the skin care product is significantly increased compared to what is known from other creams/ointments.
