Abstract
En fremgangsmåte til å undersøke en overflate ved å bruk et interferometer, hvor det er relativ bevegelse mellom overflaten og interferometeret, og hvor bevegelsen har en totalhastighet Vtot som inkluderer en transversal eller sideveis komponent Vt og en langsgående komponent Vl. Fremgangsmåten innbefatter: å rette en objektstråle av koherent lys mot en måleposisj on ved overflaten, hvorved det er en relativ bevegelse mellom overflaten og måleposisjonen; å anordne en gruppering av detektorer på interferometeret langs en linje som strekker seg overveiende i den transversale retningen, og hvor detektorene anordnes til å påvise lysstråler med ulike vinkelretninger som representerer ulike følsomhetsretninger; å frembringe en referansestråle av koherent lys som er koherent med objektstrålen; å kombinere referansestrålen med den fra overflaten reflekterte objektstråle for å frembringe en kryssinterferens i flekkmønsteret, som tildanner informasjon om den relative bevegelsen til overflaten og interferometeret; å påvise flekkmønsteret og kryssinterferensmønsteret med detektorene; å bestemme hvilken detektor i grupperingen som har null eller minimum følsomhet overfor bevegelsens totalhastighet Vtot, og ved det identifisere detektoren som har en følsomhetsretningslinj e som står vinkelrett på Vtot; å overvåke den temporale endringen i hvilke av detektorene som har null eller minimum følsomhet, og ved det fastslå endringen i retning for Vtot over tid som forårsaket av endringer i Vl, og å bestemme temporale endringer i Vl.
