Modifisert stivelsessammensetning fremstilles ved å kombinere en stivelse med en polymer og koke den kombinerte stivelse og polymersammensetningen under sure betingelser, hvor kokingen gir anioniske grupper på polymeren. En annen modifisert stivelsessammensetning fremstiUes ved å koke en stivelse og kombinere stivelsen med en kokt polymer, hvor kokingen gir anioniske gmpper på polymeren, og polymeren har blitt kokt separat fra stivelsen. Sammensetningene kan anvendes som klaringsmidler for å fjeme faste stoffer og andre suspenderte materialer fra vandige dispersjoner, og særhg som retensjonsmidler ved fremstilling av papir.
