Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører en plast/stivelsesblanding hvor stivelseskornene er overflatemodifisert, og det særegne ved oppfinnelsen er at plasten er en polyesterharpiks og at overflatemodifiseringen er utført ved at stivelseskornene vaskes med en alkalisk løsning inneholdende alkali-metall-eller jordalkalimetallioner.
Disse og andre trekk ved oppfinnelsen fremgår av patentkrav-ene.
Formålet for den foreliggende oppfinnelse er å tilveie-
bringe en plastblanding hvor en del av den syntetiske polymer erstattes med stivelseskornene, mens de fysikalske egenskaper av plastmaterialet hovedsakelig opprettholdes og endog i noen henseender forbedres.
Bruken av naturlige stivelseskorn som et fyllstoff i plast-materialbaserte blandinger er foreslått i de tidligere britiske patentskrift 1.485.833 og 1.487.050, men disse patentskrifter vedrørte spesielt termoplastpolymerer som dannes ved fysikalsk intense prosesser som f.eks. ekstrudering eller sprøytestøping. Den foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører blandinger basert på støpbare polyesterharpikser som ikke-formes under trykk og vansligvis forbundet er fiberforsterket.
I samsvar med oppfinnelsen tilveiebringes således en polyester/stivelsesblanding hvori stivelseskornene på sine overflater er blitt modifisert til å gjøre dem reaktive med harpiksen slik at hele materialblandingen forbedres. Ved dette anvendes alkalimetall- eller jordalkalimetallioner implanteres ved vasking slik at stivelsen gjøres reaktiv med en polyesterharpiks ved at det dannes en kjemisk blanding.
Spesifikt underkastes stivelseskornene før blandingen med harpiksen en overflatebehandling som involverer implantering av en liten rest av metallioner hvor metallene er valgt som alkalimetallene eller jordalkalimetallene, hvis oksyder er alkaliske ved reaksjon i nærvær av vann. Det kan iakttas at de fleste kommersielle rå stivelser viser en svakt sur pH når de oppslemmes i rent vann og overflatelagene av metallionene kan lett skapes på overflaten av disse stivelseskorn ved å heve pH i deres suspensjoner i vann ved enkelt å tilsette oppløsninger av alkalier mens pH i dispersjonene overvåkes, idet den alkalibehandlede stivelse til slutt gjenvinnes på en hvilken som helst passende måte, f.eks.
ved forstøvningstørking. I tilfellet med jordalkalimetaller kan saltene med svake syrer utgjøre passende tilsetnings-løsninger. Den aktive kjemiske natur av overflaten av stivelseskornene betyr at metallionene kan innta posisjoner på disse overflater enten ved kjemiske reaksjoner innbefattende ionisering av H-atomer i overflaten, OH-grupper, eller ved enkel mekanisk sorpsjon av metallhydroksydene, eller ved en kombinasjon av prosessene. Fordelene sees klart i produkter basert på polyesterharpikser og viser en kjemisk gjensidig reaksjon mellom de alkaliske grupper forbundet til stivelses-overflåtene og de sure grupper som er kjent å foreligge i polyesterharpiksene og kan påvises ved direkte titrering av disse harpikser med alkali med en konsistent og positiv verdi for deres syretall. Typisk er dette i området 10 til 30 mg KOH pr. gram harpiks.
De følgende eksempler illustrerer oppfinnelsen:
Eksempel 1.
Potetstivelsesfylt polyesterharpiks.
Natriumhydroksydoppløsning er overflatebehandlings-reagenset, og potetstivelse velges som fyllstoff på grunn av dens vel-kjente høye ionebytterevne på overflaten. Polyesterharpiks
»A" levert av strand Glass Co. og to polyesterharpikser
leveres av Scott Bader Co. med forskjellige syretall. På
grunn av kornstørrelsen var vaskeprosedyren for potetstivelsen forholdsvis enkel. Potetstivelseskornene ble lett dekantert fra den dispergerende oppløsning og den klare væske ble også lett avsuget. Den generelle og enkle metode for"vasking" av potetstivelseskornene med alkali var som følger: Potetstivelse med 14 % fuktighetsinnhold som levert kommersielt ble suspendert i en 10% dispersjon i destillert vann ved mekanisk omrøring og pH ble innstilt til mellom 7,5 og 9,5
med forsiktig tilsetning av 0,1 molar natriumhydroksydopp-løsning. Denne suspensjon fikk avsette seg og den overliggende væske ble fjernet ved avsuging. Faststoffene ble suspendert på nytt i en liknende mengde vann og pH på nytt innstilt i området 7,5 til 9,5 og dispersjonen ble så tørket ved bruk av en forstøvningstørkeinnretning hvori forstøvningen ble gjennomført ved hjelp av et forstøvningssystem med komprimert luft. Produktet var et hvitt frittstrømmende pulver med fuktighetsinnhold 4% eller mindre. Dette material ble deretter ovnstørket ved 80°C til et endelig fuktighetsinnhold på mindre enn 1%. Polyesterprøver ble fremstilt ved å omrøre blandinger av den passende harpikssirup med den modifiserte stivelse,
i noen minutter i et enkelt apparat anordnet slik at luft-trykket kunne reduseres hurtig for å befri blandingen for bobler. Når en brukbar blanding var. fremstilt ble så de anbefalte katalysatorkonsentrasjoner tilsatt (1% MEK metyl-etylketon-peroksydoppløsning med 50% konsentrasjon) og omrøringen fortsatt i noen minutter. Stykker ble så støpt i en enkel form under anvendelse av glassplater belagt med et polyvinylalkohol-slippmiddellag.
Fra disse støpte stykker ble etter en ensartet modnings-periode prøvestykker tilkuttet i form av enkle stenger som så ble underkastet standard mekaniske testemetoder (ASTM D790). Resultatene er oppført i den etterfølgende tabell
for prøver som i hvert tilfelle inneholdt 30 vektdeler stivelse pr. 100 deler harpiks.

Forskjellige kommentarer kan fremføres på basis av tabellen, og de visuelle observasjoner samt observasjonene med Scanning Electron Microscope for prøvene. Det bemerkes først at de blandinger hvor potetstivelsesgranulene ble vasket med alkali viser en mye høyere kryss-bruddstyrke enn prøvene hvor det ble anvendt vannvasket stivelse. Alkalibehandlingen forbedrer således adhesjonen i grenseflaten mellom stivelsespartikler og harpiks. Alkaliene synes imidlertid å nå en maksimal effekt ved den lave alkalikonsentrasjon og deretter stabiliseres forbedringen.
Deretter har transparensen av de potetstivelsesfylte polyesterharpikser og de derav fremstilte sammensatte materialer en lysgjennomslipping som er omtrent lik de ufylte harpikser.
Bruddflatene av disse teststykker ble undersøkt ved hjelp av elektrcnmikroskopering og det var meget klart at forbedringen i adhesjon mellom stivelse og harpiks oppnådd ved den optimale alkaliske behandling hadde medført en dramatisk forskjell i bruddfysikken. Mens de ubehandlede potetstivelsesfylte emner viste stivelseskorn ved bruddflaten hovedsakelig uskadet viste de stykker som var fremstilt under anvendelse av alkali-behandlet stivelse stivelseskorn som nesten alle var brukket, og med andre ord hadde fyllstoff/grunnmasse-adhesjonen nådd det nivå som kreves for å overføre bruddet fra harpiksen inn i stivelseskornene. Disse iakttagelser viser klart at brudd-energien kan økes og dette er faktisk bevist eksperimentelt ved målinger av Izod-slagstyrke.
Forbedring i slagstyrke.
Eksempel 2
Prøver av støpte stykker og teststaver ble fremstilt, hovedsakelig som beskrevet i eksempel 1, men i dette tilfellet under anvendelse av et ris-stivelsesfyllstoff avledet fra vanlig kommersielt material oppdelt i to porsjoner, hvorav den ene ble enkelt vasket med destillert vann filtrert gjennom et filter med 38 mikrometer åpninger, og faststoffet gjenvunnet ved forstøvningstørking. Den annen porsjon ble underkastet en alkalivaskemetode nøyaktig som beskrevet i eksempel 1 og også gjenvunnet ved forstøvningstørking fra dispersjonen ved pH 9,5. Teststykkene inneholdende 30 vektdeler stivelse med mindre enn 1% endelig fuktighetsinnhold pr. 100 vektdeler Strand Glass Company harpiks "A" hvor også standardmetoden i ASTM D7 90 ble anvendt, ga resultater som angitt detaljert i den etterfølgende tabell: Tre punkts test med stivelsesfylt polyesterharpiks "A"

I begge eksempler er stivelseskornene bevart intakt i den herdede harpiks. Modifiseringen er en overflatemodifisering og de dannede bindinger er fra stivelsesoverflaten til harpiksgrunnmassen.
Med hensyn til andelen av modifisert stivelse kan opptil
70 vekt% innlemmes. For å sikre risleevnen er imidlertid 30% et passende tall, idet den muliggjør en vesentlig erstatning av polymer med stivelse og derav økonomisk fordel og de forbedrede fysikalske egenskaper som angitt ovenfor.
Claims (2)
1. Plast/stivelsesblanding hvor stivelseskornene er overflatemodifisert,
karakterisert ved at plasten er en polyesterharpiks og at overflatemodifiseringen er utført ved at stivelseskornene vaskes med en alkalisk løsning inneholdende alkalimetall- eller jordalkalimetallioner.
2. Blanding som angitt i krav 1, karakterisert ved at den alkaliske løsning er en natriumhydroksydløsning.
