Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse angår en fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av natriumklorat ved elektrolyse av en oppløsning av natriumklorid i elektrolyseceller utstyrt med metallanoder belagt med platina-iridium eller med rutheniumdioksyd, der elektrolysen foregår med forbedret Faraday-utbytte.
Elektrolytisk fremstilling av natriumklorat blir i det vesentlige gjennom-ført ved elektrolyse av en oppløsning av natriumklorid.
Reaksjonene ved elektrodene er de følgende:
ved anoden dannes det klor i henhold til:
og kloret som dannes ved anoden reagerer med vann i henhold til: og den dannede hypokloritt omdannes til klorat ifølge reaksjonen:
Samtidig dannes det elektrokjemiske klorat utfra hypoklorittioner i henhold til:
Denne reaksjon er ansvarlig for den utvikling av oksygenet som man observerer under elektrolysen, en utvikling som er hovedårsaken til reduksjonen av Faraday-utbytte;
ved katoden dannes det hydrogen i henhold til:
Hypokloritt som dannes i cellen kan reduseres av hydrogen i henhold til:
Denne bireaksjon (8), også en årsak til en reduksjon av Faraday-utbytte, bekjempes generelt ved tilsetning av natriumdikromat i en mengde på 2 til 10 g/l til elektrolytten.
En annen årsak til reduksjonen av Faraday-utbytte skyldes det faktum at klor som dannes ved anoden kan unnvike direkte fra cellen uten å absorberes, som følge av likevekten
foreligger det et visst klor-damptrykk over oppløsningen og klor kan således unnvike over hele væskeoverflaten.
Reaksjon (5) er overveiende ved dannelse av klorat og denne reaksjon favoriseres av en pH-verdi innen området 6 til 6,5 i det den optimale verdi avhenger av driftstemperaturene. For å holde denne pH-verdi optimal, tilsetter man således til elektrolytten en sur oppløsning, generelt saltsyre, noe som tillater blant annet å kompensere for eventuelle klortap.
Denne tilsetning skjer i henhold til de klassiske metoder
- enten ved mateoppløsningen til cellen
- direkte til cellen
- eller på begge måter samtidig
og er generelt automatisert takket være en pH-regulering.
Ved de driftsbetingelser man vanligvis finner, nemlig
drifts-pH 6 til 6,5 oppnådd ved tilsetning av 25 til 40 kg 33%- ig HC1 pr. tonn fremstilt natriumklorat strømtetthet pr. m<2> 1500 til 6000 anoder titanbasis med dekke av Pt/Ir eller RuC>2 har de utviklede gasser vanligvis følgende sammensetning:
og Faraday-utbytte er over 92%.
Man har søkt å forbedre dette utbytte. Diverse løsninger er foreslått som alle har forbindelse med forbedring av belegget på anodene slik som antydet i FR-PS 2187416.
Av kjent teknikk skal det videre henvises til NO-PS 142872 som beskriver tilsetning av fosfater eller polyfosfater, eller tilsvarende syrer, til cellene for elektrolyse av natriumklorid for fremstilling av natriumklorat. Ifølge patentet er tilsetningen av polyfosfat en funksjon av mengden jordalkalikationer som er tilstede i badet, generelt 0,5 til 10 ganger den støkiometriske mengde som er nødvendig for å kompleksdanne jordalkalimetallkationene.
Patentet beskriver ikke anvendelse av saltsyre for å opprettholde pH-verdien, videre skal alkali- eller hydrogenpolyfosfatene det dreier seg om, oppfattes i uttrykkets videste betydning slik det fremgår av første hele avsnitt i patentets side 5.
Ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse er det vesentlig at den benyttede blanding er fosforsyre. Tilsetning av fosforsyre til den saltsyre som tjener til regulering av pH-verdien i cellene, har en uventet "doping"-effekt på den benyttede saltsyre.
Foreliggende oppfinnelse tar således sikte på å forbedre den kjente teknikk og angår derved en fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av natriumklorat av den innledningsvis nevnte type, idet fremgangsmåten karakteri-seres ved at det til den saltsyre som benyttes for å opprettholde den optimale drifts-pH-verdi tilsettes 85%-ig fosforsyre i en mengde av 1-2 kg pr. tonn fremstilt natriumklorat.
Ved dette er det funnet en fremgangsmåte som tillater å oppnå en økning på 1 til 3% av Faraday-utbyttet ved å virke direkte på elektrolytten.
Økningen i utbytte avhenger av mengden elektrolytt, cellens teknologi og de benyttede betingelser.
De følgende eksempler illustrerer på ikke-begrensende måte fremgangsmåten ifølge oppfinnelsen.
Eksempel 1
1) Man gjennomfører en elektrolyse ifølge den klassiske driftsmåte i en industriell celle på 35 000 A utstyrt med titananoder med et belegg på basis av rutheniumdioksyd. Cellen mates med en oppløsning med sammensetningen:
og matehastigheten er 120 l/t.
Man tilsetter kontinuerlig 550 ml 33%-igHCl til cellen.
Cellen arbeider med en strømtetthet på 2000 A/m^ ved 70 'C. pH-verdien er 6,3.
Sammensetningen for oppløsningen som går ut av cellen er:
Gassene som dannes under elektrolysen har følgende sammensetning:
og Faraday-utbytte er lik 92,7%.
2) Under de samme driftsbetingelser og i henhold til fremgangsmåten ifølge oppfinnelsen, tilsetter man til saltsyren en kontinuerlig mengde på 220 ml 10%-ig H3PO4 av termisk opprinnelse.
Sammensetningen for den dannede gass er deretter:
hvorved Faraday-utbyttet når 94,5%.
Man fastslår således en forbedring av utbytte på 1,8%.
Eksempel 2
Under de samme elektrolysedriftsbetingelser som i eksempel 1, tilsetter man fosforsyre oppnådd ad fuktig vei, i en mengde på 0,15 g 10%-ig syre pr. liter elektrolytt.
Oksygenmengden i gassen synker til 0,3%, noe som bringer Faraday-utbyttet fra 92,72% til 93,3%.

- Fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av natriumklorat ved elektrolyse av en oppløsning av natriumklorid i elektrolyseceller utstyrt med metallanoder belagt med platina-iridium eller med rutheniumdioksyd, karakterisert ved at det til den saltsyre som benyttes for å opprettholde den optimale drifts-pH-verdi, tilsettes 85%-ig fosforsyre i en mengde av 1-2 kg pr. tonn fremstilt natriumklorat.
