Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører en selvaktiverende, reolo-
gisk, organofil, amin-modifisert lere som additiv til ikke-
vandige væskesysterner .
Ifølge teknikkens stand er en rekke forskjellige typer av
reologiske midler anvendt i ikke-vandige væskesystemer, som for eksempel maling, lakk, emaljelakk, voks, epoksyder, mas-
tiks og lignende. Disse væskesystemer inneholder ofte finfor-
delt, suspendert materiale, som for eksempel pigmenter og lig-
nende, og det reologiske middel er tilsatt for å fortykke sy-
stemet for å danne tixotrope flyteegenskaper med høy viskosi-
tet ved lave skjærkrefter.
Forskjellige organisk modifiserte lerer og andre anorganiske
og organiske forbindelser har tidligere vært anvendt for å
frembringe disse reologiske effekter. Men de organofile lerer som har vært anvendt ifølge teknikkens stand krever anvendelse av polare løsningsaktivatorer som må tilsettes til systemet
for å gi den reologiske effekt. Hvis de polare løsningsakti-
vatorer ikke anvendes, utvikles ikke fullstendig de ønskede reologiske egenskaper, viskositetsdannelse,pigmentsettlings-
kontroll og sigekontroll, det vil si at bare en del av lerens fortykkende virkning oppnås. Hvis de polare løsningsaktivatorer fjernes vil de hittil kjente forbindelser som inneholder or-ganolerer i tillegg øke i viskositet ved lagring, noe som har en skadelig virkning på de opprinnelige reologiske egenskaper som var tilført systemet.
Noen av disse polare additiver, som aceton, alkoholer og lign.
har lavt flammepunkt og bør derfor undgås hvis mulig.
Dessuten må disse polare additiver tilsettes i et separat
trinn ved fremstilling av systemene. Dette separate trinn øker omkostningene ved systemet. I tillegg kan noen av de po-
lare additiver reagere med andre komponenter i systemformu-
leringen og fjerne viktige reologiske egenskaper.
I motsetning til hva som er kjent fra teknikkens stand frem-
stilles i følge foreliggende oppfinnelse en selvaktiverende, reologisk, organofil, amin-modifisert lere, som ikke krever tilsetning av polare løsningsaktivatorer.
Den selvaktiverende reologiske, organofile, amin-modifiserte
lere som fremstilles inneholder reaksjonsproduktet av en metyl-benzyl-dialkylammoniumforbindelse eller en dibenzyl-dialkylammoniumforbindelse hvori alkylgruppene er valgt fra gruppen be-
stående av 14 til 22 karbonatomer, hvor 20 til 35% har 16 karbonatomer og 60 til 75% har 18 karbonatomer, og 8 til 20 karbonatomer hvor minst 5% har 8 til 14 karbonatomer, og en smec-tittlere som har en kationutvekslende evne på minst 75 milliekvivalenter pr. 100 g lere, og hvor mengden av nevnte ammoniumforbindelse er fra 100 til 130 milliekvivalenter pr. 100 g lere, basert på 100% aktiv lere.
Lerene som anvendes for fremstilling av de organofile, amin-modifiserte lerer ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse er smektittle-
rer som har en kationutvekslende evne på minst 75 milliekvivalenter pr. 100 g iere. Særlig egnede typer av lere er de na-
turlig forekommende Wyoming varianter av svellende bentonitter og lignende lerer, og hektoritt, en svellende magnesium-litium-silikatlere.
Lerene, særlig bentonittlerene, er fortrinnsvis overført til natriumformen hvis de ikke allerede foreligger i denne form.
Dette gjøres enkelt ved å fremstille en vandig lereoppslemning
og lede oppslemningen gjennom et lag av kationomdannende harpiks i natriumform. Alternativt kan leren blandes med vann og en løse-lig natriumforbindelse som natriumkarbonat, natriumhydroksyd el.lign.
og blandingen bearbeides i en kollergang eller ekstruder.
Smektittlerer som er fremstillet syntetisk ved enten ved en pneumatolytisk eller fortrinnsvis en hydrotermisk syntesepro-sess kan også anvendes ved fremstilling av de organofile lerer ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse. Representanter for slike lerer er montmorillonitt, bentonitt, beidellitt, hektoritt, sa-ponitt og stevensitt. Disse lerer kan syntetiseres hydrotermisk ved å fremstille en vandig reaksjonsblanding i form av en oppslemning som inneholder blandinger av oksydhydrater eller hydroksyder av det egnede metall med eller uten natriumfluorid
(eller alternativ utvekselbar kation eller blandinger derav)
i mengder for den spesielt ønskede syntetiske smektitt. Oppslemningen plaseres derefter i en autoklav og opphetes under trykk til en temperatur på ca. 100° til 325°C, fortrinnsvis 274° til 300°C, i tilstrekkelig lang tid for å danne det ønskede produkt. Den kation-utvekslende evne for smectittleren kan bestemmes på velkjent måte med ammoniumacetat.
De kvaternære ammoniumforbindelser som reageres med disse smec-tittlerer er metyl-benzyl- eller dibenzyl-dialkylammoniumsalter hvor alkylgruppene inneholder fra 14 til 22 karbonatomer, fortrinnsvis 16 eller 18 karbonatomer, og særlig foretrukket 20% til 35% av alkylradikalene inneholder 16 karbonatomer og 60% til 75% inneholder 18 karbonatomer, eller 8 til 20 karbonatomer hvor minst 5% har 8 til 14 karbonatomer og fortrinnsvis minst 20% har 12 karbonatomer. Anionsaltet ér fortrinnsvis valgt fra klorider eller bromider eller blandinger av disse, og særlig foretrukket er klorider, selv om andre anioner, som f.eks. acetat, hydroksyd, nitritt etc. kan være tilstede i det kvaternære ammoniumsalt for å nøytralisere den kvaternære ammonium-kation. Disse kvaternære ammoniumsalter kan representeres ved
formelen:
hvori R-l er CR^ eller C^CHg,^ er C^CHg, R og R^ er alkylgrupper inneholdende langkjedete alkylradikaler med enten 14 til 22 karbonatomer, fortrinsvis 16 eller 18 karbonatomer og særlig foretrukket hvor 20% til 35% av de lang-kjed.ete alkylradikaler inneholdende 16 karbonatomer og 60% til 75% av de langkjedete alkylradikaler inneholder 18 karbonatomer, eller 8 til 20 karbonatomer hvor minst 5% har 8 til 14 karbonatomer og særlig foretrukket minst 20% har 12 karbonatomer, og hvor M er klorid, bromid, nitritt, hydroxyl, acetat, metylsulfat eller blandinger av disse.
De foretrukne kvaternære ammoniumsalter er metyl-benzyl-dihydrogenert-talg-ammoniumklorid og metyl-benzyl-dikokosolje-fettsyre-ammoniumklorid. Kommersielt fremstilt hydrogenert talg har folgende typiske analyse: 2,0%" C^, 0,5%" C-^, 29,0% Cl6, 1,5%' C17, 66,0% Cl8 og 1,0%" C20 alkylradikaler. Kommersielt fremstilt kokosoljefettsyre har folgende typiske analyse: 5-9% Cg, 4-10% C1Q, 44-5l£ C12, 13-18% C^, 7-10% C-^ og 1-4% C-j^g alkylgrupper.
Den organofile lere ifolge foreliggende oppfinnelse kan fremstilles ved å blande leren, den kvaternære ammoniumforbindelse og vann,fortrinnsvis ved en temperatur fra 38°C til 82°C, særlig foretrukket fra 60°C til 77°C i tilstrekkelig lang tid for den organiske, kvaternære ammoniumforbindelse til å reagere med lerepartiklene, hvorefter folger filtrering, vasking, torring og maling. Hvis de organofile lerer skal brukes i emulsjoner bortfaller torring-og malingstrinnet. Hvis leren, den kvaternære ammoniumf orbindelse og vann blandes i slike konsentrasjoner at det ikke dannes noen oppslemning, kan filtrerings- og vasketrinnet elimineres.
Fortrinnsvis blir leren dispergert i vann ved en konsentrasjon fra ca. 1-7 vekts% og oppslemningen sentrifugeres eventuelt for å fjerne ikke-lere forurensninger som utgjor fra ca. 10 vekts% til ca. 50 vekts% av den opprinnelige lereforbindelse. Oppslemningen rores og oppvarmes til en temperatur fra 60°C til 77°C hvorpå det kvaternære aminsalt tilsettes i det onskede milliekvivalentforhold, fortrinnsvis som en væske i isopropanol eller dispergert i vann, og omroringen fortsetter for å gjennomfore reaksjonen.
Mengden av den kvaternære ammoniumforbindelse som tilsettes
til leren ifdlge foreliggende oppfinnelse må være tilstrekke-
lig for å tilfore leren de onskede forbedrede dispersjons-egenskaper. Milliekvivalentforholdet er definert som det antall milliekvivalenter av den kvaternære ammoniumf orbindelse i den organofile lere pr. 100 g lere på en 100% aktiv basis.
Den organofile lere ifolge foreliggende oppfinnelse har et milliekvivalentforhold fra 100 til 130. Ved lavere milliekvivalentforhold er de organofile lerer ineffektive geleringsmidler selv om de kan være effektive gelerings-
midler når de dispergeres på konvensjonell måte med et polart additiv. Ved hoyere ekvivalentforhold er de organofile lerer dårlige geleringsmidler. Imidlertid vil de foretrukne milli-ekvivalentf orhold innen området fra 100 til 130 variere, avhengig av det organiske systems karakteristika, som skal geleres av den organofile lere.
De ikke-vandige væskesystemer hvori de selvaktiverende organofile, amin-modifiserte lerer er anvendbare omfatter maling, lakk, emaljelakk, voks, epoksyder, mastiks, klebestoffer, kosmetika o.l. Disse væsker kan fremstilles på en hvilken som helst kjent måte, som f.eks. med kolloidmoller, valsemoller, kulemoller og dispersatorer med hoy hastighet hvori det- flytende pigment-materiale' blir godt dispergert i den organiske bærer ved de hoye skjærkrefter som anvendes ved fremstillingen.
Det organofile lere-geleringsmiddel anvendes i mengder som er tilstrekkelig for å oppnå de onskede rheologiske egenskaper,
som hoy viskositet ved lav skjærhastighet, sigekontroll av væskefilm og forhindring av setling og hårdpakking av pigmentet som er tilstede i væskekomposisjonen. Mengden av det organofile lere-geleringsmiddel som anvendes i det ikke-vandige væskesystem skal fortrinsvis være mellom ca. 0,1% og ca. 5>0% basert på vekten av det behandlede ikke-vandige
væskesystem og særlig foretrukket mellom 0,3% og 2,0% for å
gi de onskede rheologiske virkninger.
Folgende eksempler er gitt for å illustrere oppfinnelsen men
er ikke å anse^som begrensende. Alle prosentangivelser er basert på vekts% unntatt hvor annerledes er anfort.
Eksempel 1
Ca. 1500 g av en 2,9% oppslemning av Wyoming bentonitt i vann,
som på forhånd har vært sentrifugert for å fjerne alle ikke-lereforurensninger og behandlet i en ioneveksler for å over-
fore leren til natriumformen ble oppvarmet til ca. 65,5°C og blandet med 39,3 g av et 77,8% aktiv metyl-benzyl-dihydrb-genert-talg-ammoniumklorid. Denne blanding ble omrort i 45
minutter, filtrert for å fjerne fast stoff, torret ved 65,5°C
og tilslutt malt for å gi en organofil lere inneholdende 112,0 milliekvivalenter av kvaternære ammoniumforbindelse pr. 100 g lere.
Metyl-benzyl-dihydrogenert-talg-ammoniumbentonitten ble an-
vendt som det reologiske additiv i en blank emaljelakk ved å
anvende en blanding av 95% metanol og 5% vann som den polare losningsaktivator i ett tilfelle og eliminere den polare aktivator i det andre tilfelle. For sammenligning ble 2
emaljelakker fremstilt ved anvendelse av. dimetyl-rdihydrogenert-talg-ammoniumbentonitt som den organofile' lere. I ett tilfelle . '"■ ble en blanding av 95% metanol og 5% vann anvendt som den polare losningsaktivator og i det andre tilfelle ble ingen polar losningsaktivator anvendt. I tillegg ble en emalje-
lakk fremstilt uten tilsetning av noe reologisk additiv.
Emaljelakkene ble fremstilt ved anvendelse av en hurtiggående dispersator ved bruk av folgende formulering:
Viskositetsdata for disse emaljelakksammensetninger er anfort i Tabell II. Viskositetsbestemmelsene ble gjort ved anvendelse av et Brookfield RVT kon- og plateviskosimeter ved 10 opm, til-svarende en skjærhastighet på 10 sekunder "'*. ;Tabellen viser at når konvensjonelt anvendt dimetyl-dihydrogenert-talg-ammoniumbentonitt anvendes i emaljelakken uten bruk av en polar losningsaktivator, ser man bare en liten okning i viskositeten over emaljelakken som ikke inneholder noen organofil lere som rheologisk additiv. Når metanol-vann-blandingen tilsettes, skjer det en aktivering av organoleren og en merkbar viskositetsokning oppnåes. ;Derimot hvis 'metyl-benzyl-dihydrogenert-talg-ammoniumbentonitt anvendes er ikke den oppnådde viskositet avhengig av om en polar losningsaktivator er anvendt. Fulle reologiske egenskaper (inkl. viskositet, signingskontroll og pigmentsuspen-sjon) er oppnådd i begge tilfelle." ' ;Eksempel 2 ;Ca. 1500 g av en 2, 8% oppslemning av Wyomingbentonitt i vann, som på forhånd har vært sentrifugert for å fjerne alle ikke-lereforurensninger og behandlet i en ioneveksler for å over-fore leren til natriumformen ble oppvarmet til ca. 65,5°C og blandet med 28,0 g av en 90,0% aktiv metyl-benzyl-dikokosfettsyre-ammoniumklorid. Denne blanding ble omrort i k5 minutter, torret ved 65,5°C og tilslutt malt for å gi et organofilt amin-modifisert lere inneholdende 122,7 milliekvivalenter av kvaternær* ammoniumf orbindelse pr. 100 g lere.
Metyl-benzyl-dikokosfettsyre-ammoniumbentonitt ble anvendt
som rheologisk additiv i den blanke emaljelakkformulering ifolge Eksempel 1. I en prove ble en'blanding av 95% metanol og 5% vann inkorporert som den polare losningsaktivator. I
den annen prove ble aktivatoren utelatt.
Resultatene viser at viskositetsdannelse, tixotropi,
signingskontroll og pigmentsetlingskontrollegenskaper er praktisk talt like både med og uten den polare losningsakti-
vator. Dette ville ikke være tilfelle ved bruk av konven-
sjonelle organofile lerer.
Eksempel 3
Fremgangsmåten ifblge Eksempel 1 ble gjentatt bortsett fra at
et forskjellig ikke-vandig system, nemlig en basisk lysiliko-kromat-alkyl primer ble anvendt, som anfort nedenfor, i stedet for den blanke emaljelakk.
Folgende formulering ble fremstilt på en hurtiggående disper—
sator: i
Resultatene viser at viskositetsdannelse, tixotropi, signingskontroll og pigmentsetlingskontrollegenskaper var praktisk talt like både med og uten den polare losningsaktivator. Dette ville ikke vært tilfelle ved anvendelse av konvensjonelle ^organofile lerer.

Resultatene viser at viskositetsdannelse, tixotropi, signingskontroll og pigmentsetlingskontrollegenskaper var praktisk talt like både med og uten en polar losningsaktivator. Dette ville ikke vært tilfelle ved anvendelse av konvensjonelle organofile lerer.
Eksempel 5
Fremgangsmåten ifolge Eksempel 1 ble gjentatt bortsett fra at i stedet for den blanke emaljelakk ble den nedenfor angitte utvendige trebeis anvendt som ikke-vandig system og en kule-molle ble anvendt i stedet for en hurtiggående dispersator.
Resultatene viser at pigmentsuspensjonen var praktisk talt
ekvivalent både i nærvær og fravær av den polare losnings-
aktivator. Dette ville ikke vært tilfelle ved bruk av ,. konvensjonelle organofile lerer..
Eksempel 6
Fremgangsmåten ifolge Eksempel lble gjentatt bortsett fra at
en opplosningsbasert tetningsmasse (som beskrevet nedenfor)
ble anvendt i stedet for den blanke emaljelakk ifolge
Eksempel 1. Tettemassen ble fremstilt ved anvendelse av en
Sigma Mixer.
Resultatene indikerer at signing og setlingskontrollegen-skapene var praktisk talt ekvivalente både i nærvær og fravær av en polar opplosningsaktivator. Dette ville ikke vært tilfelle ve"d-anvendelse av konvensjonelle organofile lerer.
Eksempel 7
Fremgangsmåten ifolge Eksempel 1 ble gjentatt bortsett fra at et annet ikke-vandig system (som beskrevet nedenfor) ble anvendt i stedet for den blanke emaljelakk ifolge Eksempel 1.
F61gende formulering ble fremstilt ved bruk av en Lighting Mixer:
Resultatene viser at viskositetsdannelsen var praktisk talt ekvivalent både med og uten polar losningsaktivator. Dette ville ikke vært tilfelle ved anvendelse av konvensjonelle organofile lerer.
Eksempel 8
Fremgangsmåten ifolge Eksempel 1 ble gjentatt bortsett fra at et annet ikke-vandig system (som beskrevet nedenfor) ble anvendt i stedet for den blanke emaljelakk ifolge Eksempel 1.
Folgende formulering ble fremstilt ved anvendelse av en Lightning Mixer og fyllt i aerosolbokser:
Resultatene viser at viskositetsdannelsen og aluminiumklor-hydratsuspensjonen i aerosolboksen var praktisk talt ekvivalente både med og uten polar losningsaktivator. Dette ville ikke vært tilfelle ved anvendelse av konvensjonelle organofile lerer.
Eksempel 9
Fremgangsmåten ifolge Eksempel 1 ble gjentatt bortsett fra at et annet ikke-vandig system (som beskrevet nedenfor) ble anvendt i stedet for den blanke emaljelakk ifolge Eksempel 1. Resultatene viser at viskositetsdannelse, tixotropi og signingskontrollegenskaper var praktisk talt ekvivalente både med og uten en polar losningsaktivator. Dette ville ikke vært tilfelle ved anvendelse av konvensjonelle organofile lerer.
Claims (10)
1. Selvaktiverende reologisk, organofil, amin-modifisert lere egnet som additiv til ikke-vandige væskesystemer, -,karakterisert ved reaksjonsproduktet av en metyl-benzyl-dialkylammoniumforbindelse eller en dibenzyl-dialkylammoniumforbindelse hvori alkylgruppene er valgt fra gruppen bestående av 14 til 22 karbonatomer, hvor 20 til 35%
har 16 karbonatomer og 60 til 75% har 18 karbonatomer, og 8 til 20 karbonatomer hvor minst 5% har 8 til 14 karbonatomer, og en sméctittlere som har 'en kationutvekslende evne på minst 75 milliékvivalenter pr. ldO g lere, og hvor mengden av nevnte ammoniumforbindelse er fra 100 til 130 milliékvivalenter pr. 100 g lere, basert på 100% aktiv lere.
2. Amin-modifisert lere ifølge krav 1, karakterisert ved at smectittleren er hektoritt eller natrium-bentonitt.
3. Amin-modifisert lere ifølge krav 1 eller 2, karakterisert ved at ammoniumforbindelsen har formelen:

4. Amin-modifisert lere ifølge krav 3, karakterisert ved at metyl-benzyl-dialkylammoniumforbindelsen er metyl-benzyl-dihydrogenert-talg-ammoniumklorid.
5. Amin-modifisert lere ifølge krav 3, karakterisert ved at dibenzyl-dialkylammoniumforbindelsen er dibenzyl-dihydrogenert-talg-ammoniumklorid.
6. Amin-modifisert lere ifølge krav 3, karakterisert ved at metyl-benzyl^dialkylammoniumforbindelsen er metyl-benzyl-dikokosfettsyreammoniumklorid.
7. Amin-modifisert lere ifølge krav 3, karakterisert ved at dibenzyl-dialkylammoniumforbindelseri er dibenzy1-dikokos fettsyreammoniumklorid.
8. Ikke-vandig væskesystem, karakterisert ved at det omfatter 0,1 til 5 vekt% organofil, amin-modifisert lere ifølge noen av kravene 1-7, regnet på vekten av væskesysternet.
9. Ikke-vandig væskesystem ifølge krav 8, karakterisert ved at den organofile, amin-modifiserte lere
utgjør fra 0,3 til 2,0 vekt% av væskesysternet.
10. Ikke-vandig væskesystem ifølge krav 8-9, karakterisert ved at bindemidlet er maling, lakk, emaljelakk, voks, epoksyharpiks, mastixklebestoff eller kosmetika.
