Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse angår et klebemiddel basert
på anvendelse av en praktisk talt fullstendig hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer som beskyttende kolloid i vandige vinylacetatethylencopolymeremulsjoner. Oppfinnelsen angår likeledes laminater hvor klebemidlet er anvendt.
Det har lenge vært et mål for forskningen å tilveie-bringe stabile vinylacetatcopolymeremulsjoner som er i stand til å gi klebende bindinger som oppviser optimal vannfasthet og høy styrke. I US patentskrift 3.56 3.851 angis det at ett av de oftest anvendte modifiseringsmidler for vinylacetat-
homo- eller copolymeremulsjoner er polyvinylalkohol, som bidrar til å øke viskositeten og forbedrer klebemidlets maskinerbarhet og fuktbarhet.
Imidlertid er det i nevnte patentskrift angitt at
slike emulsjoner inneholdende polyvinylalkohol er mangel-
fulle med hensyn til vannfasthet. Ifølge patentskriftet gir tilsetning av visse sure metallsaltherdemidler til de van-
dige emulsjoner av copolymerer av vinylacetat, hvilke emulsjoner også inneholder polyvinylalkohol som beskyttende kolloid, klebende bindinger som er meget vannfaste. De vinyl-acetatcopolymerer som omfattes av dette patentskrift, er slike copolymerer med alkylestere av acrylsyre og methacrylsyre, substituerte eller usubstituerte mono- eller dialkylestere av a,p-umettede dicarboxylsyrer, a,3-umettede carboxylsyrer, vinylhalogenider, vinylidenhalogenider og amider av a,|3-umettede carboxylsyrer.
US patentskrift 3.708.388 beskriver klebemidler bestående av vandige vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeremulsjoner inneholdende ca. 5 - 40 vekt% ethylen og tørrstoffinnhold på
45 - 60%, hvori vinylacetat og ethylenmonomerene copolymeri-seres i nærvær av et beskyttende kolloid slik som vinylalkohol, hydroxyethylcellulose, casein, hydroxyethylstivelse, carboxy-methylcellulose, gummi arabicum, etc. Anvendelsen av polyvinylalkohol acetylert opp til 50% er beskrevet, og spesifikke eksempler er angitt som anvender en kombinasjon av to poly-vinylalkoholer som hver har en hydrolysegrad.på 87 - 89 mol%. Dette patentskrift inneholder ingen antydning om bruk av noen som helst spesialkvalitet av polyvinylalkohol for å oppnå forbedret vannfasthet. I den lange liste av beskyttende kolloider som er gitt i patentskriftet, er disse presentert som like-verdige . US patentskrift 3.827.996 beskriver vinylester-polymer-dispersjoner som har god stabilitet, vannfasthet og viskositets-indeks, og som er erholdt ved copolymerisering av vinylester og ethylen i et vandig medium i nærvær av delvis hydrolysert polyvinylalkohol med et midlere vinylacetatinnhold på 5 - 7 mol%, bestående hovedsakelig av vinylalkoholmolekyler inneholdende ikke mindre enn 0,6 mol%, og ikke mer enn 16mol% vinylacetat. Dette patentskrift angir ikke bruk av vinylalkohol-methylmethacrylatcopolymerer, og antyder heller ikke at god vannfasthet kan oppnåes ved anvendelse av slike.
US patentskrift 3.906.135 beskriver et klebemiddel
som i herdet tilstand gir en binding med utmerket vannfasthet. Ifølge denne publikasjon kan varidige vinylacetatpolymer/ polyvinylalkohol-holdige emulsjonsklebemidler gi herdede bindinger med betydelig forbedret vannfasthet, ved at der i klebemidlet innlemmes en monocarboxylsyre som kan danne en ester med polyvinylalkohol. Herdning av klebemidlet foreslåes ved 107 - 190°C. Den anvendte polyvinylalkohol er 75 - 100% hydrolysert.
US patentskrift 3.689.469 angår copolymerer av vinylalkohol og methylmethacrylat med et restvinylacetatinnhold på høyst 0,5 mol% (dvs. minst 99,5 mol% hydrolysert) bestående av 94 til 98% vinylalkohol og 6 til 2 vekt% methylmethacrylat. Denne copolymer er angitt å være nyttig hvor mange kommersi-elle kvaliteter av polyvinylalkohol anvendes. En særlig foretrukken anvendelse er som varp-appreturmiddel for tekstilgarn. Der finnes ingen angivelse av eller antydning om at anvendelse av denne vinylalkoholpolymer som beskyttende kolloid ved fremstilling av vinylacetat-ethylenemulsjoner vil føre til et klebemiddel med glimrende vannfasthet.
Ved hjelp av oppfinnelsen tilveiebringes der nu et klebemiddel som gir bindinger med utmerket vannfasthet, omfattende en vandig emulsjon inneholdende hovedsakelig (a) fra 40 til 60 vekt% vinylacetat-ethylencopolymer med fra 70 til
90 vekt% vinylacetat, og fra 10 til 30 vekt% ethylen, og (b) fra 2,5 til 6,0%, basert på vekten av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren, av en polymer av vinylalkohol. Det nye klebemiddel ut-merker seg ved at minst 20 vekt% av polymeren av vinylalkohol er en i det minste 98,Q mol% hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer med et methylmethacrylatinnhold på fra 1 til 10 vekt%, hvilken vinylalkoholcopolymer har en viskositet ved 20°C på
fra 5 til 50 cP som 4%'s vandig oppløsning.
I en foretrukken utførelse inneholder den vandige emulsjon fra 50 til 55 vekt% av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren og fra 3,1 til 4,0 vekt%, beregnet på vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren, av polymeren av vinylalkohol. Likeledes fore-trekkes det at fra 30 til 45 vekt% av polymeren av vinylalkohol utgjøres av en i det minste 98,0 mol% hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer med et methylmethacrylatinnhold på fra 1,5
til 6,0 vekt% og med en viskositet i 4%'s vandig oppløsning ved 20°C på fra 20 til 30 cP.
Videre angår oppfinnelsen laminater med uventet høy vannfasthet, omfattende minst to ark bundet sammen ved hjelp av klebemidlet ifølge oppfinnelsen, som angitt i krav 3.
Som anvendt her menes med uttrykket "inneholdende hovedsakelig" at de angitte bestanddeler er vesentlige. Imidler-
tid kan også andre bestanddeler, som ikke innvirker ugunstig på de fordeler som oppnåes i henhold til oppfinnelsen, være tilstede. Mens således vinylacetatethylencopolymeren og poly-vinylalkoholen er angitt som vesentlige bestanddeler, kan andre bestanddeler som vanligvis finnes i vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeremulsjoner, også innarbeides i emulsjonen.
Slike bestanddeler kan innbefatte initiatorer og aktivatorer som ikke forbrukes i copolymerisasjonsprosessen, buffere, konserveringsmidler og fyllstoffer. Foreliggende emulsjoner kan også inneholde vannoppløselige overflateaktive midler.
Med unntagelse av små mengder ikke-ioniske overflateaktive midler, som vil bli diskutert senere, er imidlertid nærvær av overflateaktive midler vanligvis ikke ønskelig, spesielt ikke når en høy grad av vannfasthet er ønsket.
Overraskende har det vist seg at anvendelse av varmt, vannoppløselig, ikke-geldannende, fullt hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer i stedet for en del eller alt av den delvis hydrolyserte polyvinylalkohol som anvendes som beskyttende kolloid ved fremstilling av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeremulsjoner, førte til glimrende vannfasthet av den klebende binding. Det ble funnet at når fra 20 til 100 vekt%, fortrinnsvis fra 30 til 45 vekt%, av det beskyttende polyvinylalkohol-kolloid i en vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeremulsjon inneholdende totalt fra 2,5 til 6,0%, fortrinnsvis fra 3,1 til 4,0%, av polyvinylalkpholen, basert på vekten av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren, ble erstattet med visse vinylalkoholcopolymerer, ble den ovennevnte gode vannfasthet erholdt.
De spesielle vinylalkoholcopolymerer som anvendes i henhold til oppfinnelsen, er bi- og terpolymerer inneholdende methylmethacrylat (MMA). Disse copolymerer fremstilles ved copolymerisering av vinylacetat (VAc) og MMA og alkoholyse av den som mellomprodukt erholdte VAc/MMA-copolymer ved frem-gangsmåter som er kjent innen faget, og som er beskrevet i US patentskrift 3.689.469. Som angitt i US patentskrift 3.689.469 omdannes minst en del av gruppene avledet fra MMA
til lactongrupper under alkoholysen av VAc/MMA-copolymerfor-løperen. Methylmethacrylatcomonomerinnholdet i copolymeren vil variere fra 1 til 10 vekt%. En reduksjon av det totale comonomerinnhold til mindre enn 1 vekt% vil gi en binding som ikke vil ha den ønskede gode vannfasthet. Økning av co-monomerinnholdet utover 6 vekt% av vinylalkoholpolymeren fører ikke til noen vesentlig forbedring av vannfastheten. Følgelig inneholder vinylalkoholcopolymeren fortrinnsvis en total mengde comonomer på fra 1,5 til 6,0 vekt%. De comono-merer som kan anvendes i tillegg til methylmethacrylat for dannelse av vinylalkoholterpolymerene, er f.eks. ethylmethacrylat og butylmethacrylat.
Den delvis hydrolyserte polyvinylalkohol som helt eller delvis erstattes med vinylalkoholcopolymeren i henhold til oppfinnelsen, kan være en fra 85 til 95% hydrolysert kvalitet med en viskositet på fra 5 til 50 cP ved 20°C i en 4%'s vandig oppløsning.
I det tilfelle at alt av den delvis hydrolyserte polyvinylalkohol erstattes med fullstendig hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer, dvs. når alt av det beskyttende kolloid som anvendes ved fremstilling av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymer-emulsjonen er en fullt ut hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer,
bør et overflateåktivt middel også være tilstede for å oppnå
god emulsjonsstabilitet. Ikke-ioniske overflateaktive midler, slik som Triton -100 (octylfenoxypolyethoxyethanol), fore-trekkes . Anvendelse av anioniske overflateaktive midler nedsetter vannfastheten, og derfor anbefales ikke disse gene-relt sett.
Metoder for fremstilling av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymer-dispersjoner er vel kjent, og en hvilken som helst av de van-lige metoder kan anvendes; imidlertid er en foretrukken metode beskrevet i US patentskrift (Reissue) 28.065.
Kort omtalt utføres fremgangsmåten ved at der i et om-rørt trykkar innføres den fullstendig hydrolyserte, høymole-kylære vinylalkoholcopolymer og den lavmolekylære, delvis hydrolyserte polyvinylalkohol (dersom en sådan anvendes) opp-løst i vann, sammen med et overflateaktivt middel, vinylacetat og reduksjonsmiddelkomponenten av katalysatorsysternet. Deretter blir reaktoren spylt med nitrogen og oppvarmet mens den settes under trykk med ethylen. Polymerisasjonen initieres ved tilsetning av peroxydkomponenten av katalysatorsysternet. Når polymerisasjonen starter, som indikert ved en eksoterm reaksjon, tilsettes vinylacetat kontinuerlig, mens ethylentrykket opprettholdes og initiatotoppløsningen tilsettes for å opprettholde reaksjonstemperaturen. Nær slutten av reaksjonen tilsettes en ytterligere dose initiator for å full-føre reaksjonen.
Tabell I gir en oppsummering av prosessbetingelsene for fremstilling av de vannfaste copolymerer i klebemidlet ifølge oppfinnelsen.
De følgende eksempler illustrerer oppfinnelsen. Alle deler og prosenter er på vektbasis, hvis ikke annet er angitt.
Eksempler 1- 11
De følgende bestanddeler ble innført i en omrørt, med mantel forsynt, rustfri 19 liters trykkbeholder av stål ut-styrt med omrører,i de mengder som er angitt her eller i Tabell II: en fullstendig hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer, middels viskøs og/eller lavviskøs, delvis hydrolysert polyvinylalkohol, oppløst i 5360 g vann, 260 g av en 6,1%'s oppløsning av sink-(5)
fomaldehydsulfoxylat i vann, 50 g Triton WX-100, et ikke-ionisk overflateaktivt middel (med unntagelse av kontrollprøven som ikke inneholdt noe Triton ^X-100, og unntatt eksempler 10 og 11, hvor det i stedet ble anvendt 100 g Triton ^ X-305 (octylfenoxypolyethoxyethanol med en større mengde innebygget ethylenoxyd), og 5800 g vinylacetat. I eksempel 10 ble det dessuten anvendt 25 g acrylsyre.
Reaktoren ble lukket og spylt med nitrogen, og inn-holdet ble oppvarmet til 50°C, mens ethylen ble tilført inntil et trykk på 45,7 kg/cm 2. Polymerisasjonen ble initiert ved starting av tilførsel av en blanding av 35 g av en 40%'s hydrogenperoxydoppløsning og 1165 g vann, unntatt for kontroll-prøven,hvor 70 g av en 30%'s oppløsning av og 1165 g vann ble tilsatt.
Når polymerisasjonen startet, som indikert ved en eksoterm reaksjon, ble kontinuerlig tilsetning av utgangsmaterialet startet. Temperaturen flatet ut ved 80°C, og ethylentrykket ble hevet til og opprettholdt ved 65 kg/cm 2. Den kontinuerlige tilførsel besto, av 2600 g vinylacetat tilsatt over et tidsrom på 30 minutter med en hastighet av 9 4 ml/min, og en initiator-oppløsning (0,8% f^C^ i vann) tiisatt for å opprettholde poly-merisas jonstemperaturen på 80°C, mens ethylentrykket ble opprettholdt ved 65 kg/cm 2. Den eksoterme reaksjon stanset etter ca. 3 timer. Deretter ble 100 g av den ovenfor angitte initiator-oppløsning ytterligere tilsatt til emulsjonen. Sluttbehandlingen besto i opprettholdelse av emulsjonen i det angitte tidsrom
(15 - 30 min) ved 80°C, etter hvilket tidsrom restvinylacetat-monomerinnholdet vanligvis var mindre enn 2,0%, basert på emul-sjonens vekt.
De fremstilte emulsjoners karakteristiske egenskaper
er angitt i tabell II. Vannfastheten ble bestemt ved anvendelse av Weyerhaeuser bløtningstest under spenning. I denne test anvendes Kraft-papir med stor våtstyrke for å danne 2,54 cm's overlapningsskjøter. Emulsjonen trekkes nedover med en tråd-omviklet stav nr. 2ORDS på et ark papir, og et annet ark legges over. Montasjen lufttørkes ved omgivelsenes temperatur i 24 timer. Deretter klippes 2,54 cm's brede remser, som dykkes ned i vann ved omgivelsenes temperatur med en 350 g's belastning i en skjærkrafttest. Dette gir en skjærkraft på 350 g pr. kvadrattomme på overlapningsskjøten. Hurtigklebning ble bestemt ved hjelp av Werles klebetest (Werle Tack Test). Ved denne test påføres en klebende emulsjon automatisk ved hjelp av Werle-instrumentet på en remse av 2 7,21 kg's Kraft-papir. En annen papirremse lamineres automatisk, og samtidig startes delaminering av de to remser. Klebetiden, angitt med en nøyaktighet av 1/10 sekund, er den tid som er nødvendig for at emulsjonen danner, en fiberopprivende binding. Dispersjonens stabilitet ble bedømt visuelt ut fra dispersjonens utseende, dvs. ut fra hvorvidt den hadde grøtet eller glatt konsistens, og ut fra hvorvidt
separate lag var synlige etter 6 måneders lagring. Alle emulsjoner oppført i tabell II hadde god stabilitet.
Claims (3)
1. Klebemiddel, omfattende en vandig emulsjon inneholdende hovedsakelig (a) fra 40 til 60 vekt% vinylacetat-ethylencopolymer .med fra 7.0 til 9 0 vekt% vinylacetat og fra 10- til 30 vekt% ethylen, og (b) fra 2,5 til 6,0%, basert på vekten av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren, av en polymer av vinylalkohol, karakterisert ved at minst 20 vekt% av polymeren av vinylalkohol er en i det minste 98,0 mol% hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer med et methylmethacrylatinnhold på fra 1 til 10 vekt%, hvilken vinylalkoholcopolymer har en viskositet ved 20°C på fra 5 til 50 cP som 4%'s vandig opp-løsning.
2. Klebemiddel ifølge krav 1, hvor den vandige emulsjon inneholder fra 50 til 55 vekt% av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren og fra 3,1 til 4,0 vekt%, beregnet på vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren, av polymeren av vinylalkohol, karakterisert ved at fra 30 til 45 vekt% av polymeren av vinylalkohol utgjøres av en i det minste 98,0 mol% hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer med et methylmethacrylatinnhold på fra 1,5 til 6,0 vekt% og med en viskositet i 4%'s vandig opp-løsning ved 20°C på fra 20 til 30 cP.
3. Laminat omfattende minst to ark eller plater bundet sammen med et klebemiddel omfattende en vandig emulsjon inneholdende hovedsakelig (a) fra 40 til 60 vekt% vinylacetat-ethy lencopolymer med fra 70 til 90 vekt% vinylacetat og fra 10 til 30 vekt% ethylen, og (b) fra 2,5 til 6,0 vekt%, basert på vekten av vinylacetat-ethylencopolymeren, av en.polymer av vinylalkohol,
karakterisert ved at det er benyttet et klebemiddel hvor minst 20 vekti av polymeren av vinylalkohol er en i det minste 98,0 mol% hydrolysert vinylalkoholcopolymer med et methylmethacrylatinnhold på fra 1 til 10 vekt%, hvilken vinylalkoholcopolymer har en viskositet ved 20°C på fra 5 til 50 cP som 4%'s vandig oppløsning.
