Abstract

1534106 Melting glass SAINT GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 11 Feb 1977 [11 Feb 1976] 05724/77 Heading C1M In preparing molten glass, granules of batch material 1 (each granule comprising substantially the desired proportions of constituents of the final glass) are preheated (in heat-exchanger 15) to below their sintering temperature, deposited (via drum 2 and duct 3) on a layer of the molten glass on hearth 4 of furnace 10, and fused by hot gas from burners 5, the molten glass being displaced during fusion (down the sloping hearth) to provide a fresh surface for deposition of further granules. The granules 1 may be pre-heated by hot gas from burners 5, flowing to the heat-exchanger 15 via duct 7. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the granules are deposited and melted on the surface of a rotating drum.
