Abstract

The pulverulent mixture of raw materials, comprising all the components of the glass in the required proportions is firstly agglomerated into granules and the granules are fed via a hopper (1) onto the sloping soleplate (4) of the furnace (10) with the aid of the distributor drum (2). The burners (5) emit flames which are perpendicular to the soleplate. The hot gases are discharged through the chimney (7), the grid (15a), the heat exchanger (15) in which they preheat the granules to 500-600 DEG C, or to a temperature which is lower than their sintering temperature, and then through a dust precipitator (20) and a fan (22). The molten vitreous mass leaves via the spillway (4') and can then be refined. By virtue of the preliminary granulation of the raw materials the risk of segregation of the latter is avoided. <IMAGE>
