Abstract

1435477 Electrolysis anode with diaphragm HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 31 Oct 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 47252/74 Heading C7B An anode unit for a diaphragm cell comprises a porous anode having affixed to at least one face thereof a gas and liquid impermeable cationic permselective membrane made of a hydrolyzed copolymer of a perfluorocarbon and a fluorosulphonated perfluorovinyl ether and/or of a sulphostyrenated perfluoro ethylene-propylene copolymer. The membrane may be clamped or glued in position and may be pre-stretched in hot water and dried under tension before fixing. It may be supported on a PTFE cloth and SO 3 H groups therein may be hydrolyzed or chemically converted to SO 2 NH 2 after fabrication. A copolymer of TFE and is specified. The anode may be a mesh or screen of graphite or a valve metal optionally coated with one or more Pt metals or their oxides optionally with other oxides, e.g. R u O 2 with TiO 2 . It may have a core of Al, Cu or steel. Fe, graphite or steel cathodes are specified. The cell may have one or more intermediate compartments bounded by membranes as defined above and affixed on the cathode surface and/or between the anode and cathode. The anode compartment may be bounded on both sides by an anode unit as above with clamps holding the membrane stretched in place. Chlor-alkali production and HCl electrolysis are specified.
