Abstract
Method for treatment and installation of a partition in an electrolytic cell.
Description
The present invention relates to the treatment and assembly of a partition, which mainly consists of a membrane, in an electrolysis cell.
Det er nylig påvist at produkter med høy renhet kan oppnås med It has recently been demonstrated that products of high purity can be obtained with
Dette fører til dannelse av folder og/eller rynker på anodesiden av barrieren og innsperring av klorgass (når saltlake ble anvendt som anolytt) high yield and without excessive current loss and product loss due to ion and/or molecular migration in electrolysis cells comprising a partition wall or barrier formed by a permselective membrane mainly consisting of a hydrolyzed copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and a sulfonated perfluorovinyl ether. This barrier material was found to have desirable advantages in that it retained its effectiveness, i.e. chemical inertness, over long periods of use in electrolysis cells. However, the barrier material was found to expand during operation of the cell. This leads to the formation of folds and/or wrinkles on the anode side of the barrier and the confinement of chlorine gas (when brine was used as anolyte)

Oppfinnelsen gjelder således en fremgangsmåte for behandling og montering av en skillevegg som hovedsakelig består av en membran fremstilt av kopolymer av tetrafluoretylen og sulfonert perfluorvinyleter med formel: The invention thus relates to a method for the treatment and assembly of a partition which mainly consists of a membrane made from copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and sulphonated perfluorovinylether with formula:
i en elektrolysecelle. in an electrolysis cell.
On this background of known technology, the invention's method has as distinctive features that: a) the membrane is immersed in a warm aqueous medium for at least one hour until it is soft and "flexible,
b) den myknede membran strekkes på en ramme, b) the softened membrane is stretched on a frame,
c) den strukkede membran tørkes på rammen, c) the stretched membrane is dried on the frame,
d) den tørkede membran festes til en membranholder mellom anode og katode i elektrolysecellen, og d) the dried membrane is attached to a membrane holder between anode and cathode in the electrolysis cell, and
e) rammen fjernes fra membranen. e) the frame is removed from the membrane.
A membrane treated and mounted in this way will not
The membrane can be simply glued in place using a suitable adhesive or by similar methods which will be further described in the following.
According to the invention, the side of the cell's anode that faces the cathode can be advantageously used as a membrane holder.
På denne måte unngås gassutvikling på denne anodeside. In this way, gas development is avoided on this anode side.
Cellen 1 har innløp 5 til anolyttavdelingen for tilførsel In order for the method of the invention to be better understood, it will now be described with special reference to different apparatus suitable for the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride whereby chlorine, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen are produced efficiently and economically. In the following description of preferred embodiments of the invention, reference is made to the attached drawings, on which: Fig. 1 is a schematic view of a conventional electrolysis cell with two compartments, in which a membrane is mounted; according to the method of the invention .; 1 Fig. 2 is a schematic view of three frames which make up a buffer section in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 3 is a section through an electrolysis cell with three compartments and equipped with a buffer section composed of frames as indicated in Fig. 2. Fig. 1 shows, in connection with the present invention, an electrolysis cell for splitting aqueous sodium chloride solutions. The electrolysis cell 1 comprises a porous anode 2 and a cathode 3, which are mutually separated by means of a cation-active permselective membrane M placed on one side of the anode and held in place on this by means of suitable fasteners, e.g. clamps (not shown) or glued in place by means of suitable adhesives. Thus an anolyte compartment 13 and a catholyte compartment 14 are formed. The cell 1 has inlet 5 to the anolyte compartment for supply
av elektrolytt, dvs. saltløsning, et utløp 10 for brukt elektrolytt og et utløp 6 for klorgass som dannes på baksiden av den porøse anode. of electrolyte, i.e. salt solution, an outlet 10 for used electrolyte and an outlet 6 for chlorine gas which is formed on the back of the porous anode.
There is also an inlet 7 for the supply of liquids, e.g. aqueous dilute sodium hydroxide to the catholyte compartment 14, an outlet 8 to discharge the NaOH liquid from the catholyte compartment and an outlet 9 to discharge gas, e.g. hydrogen gas, which forms at the surface of the cathode.
During operation of this electrolysis cell 1, saturated brine is circulated, preferably brine that has been acidified by the addition of an acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, to a pH of approximately 3 to 5, continuously in the anolyte compartment 13 by introducing the brine through the inlet 5 and withdrawing through the overflow outlet 10 to the refreshing zone 11, where the spent brine is saturated again with sodium chloride and acidified with acid, f .ex. HCL, if desired.
The refreshed brine flows through line 12 to re-enter cell 1 through inlet 5.
At the same time add diluted aqueous liquid, e.g. diluted aqueous sodium hydroxide to the catholyte compartment 14 through the liquid inlet 7 and is discharged from the compartment 14 through the overflow outlet 8. The aqueous liquid is thereby concentrated in relation to the product formed at the cathode, e.g. sodium hydroxide,
Gassformede produkter, f.eks. hydrogen som dannes ved katoden, slippes ut fra cellen gjennom gassutløpet 9. and the exhausted liquid, which contains little or almost no sodium chloride, is fed to suitable recycling facilities for concentration and separation of the desired product. Further diluted aqueous liquid is fed to the catholyte compartment which, together with the water that passes through the permselective diaphragm by osmosis, serves to refresh the catholyte. Gaseous products, e.g. hydrogen formed at the cathode is released from the cell through the gas outlet 9.
Ved å anbringe og feste den kationaktive permselektive membran By placing and fixing the cation-active permselective membrane
M på forsiden av den porøse anode, dvs. den side av anoden M on the front of the porous anode, i.e. that side of the anode
Derved unngås vanskelighetene ved spenningstap som leilighetsvis opptrer ved ansamlinger av gass mellom anoden og membranen, og mer konstante cellespenninger kan oppnås. which is spaced from, but faces the cathode part, the membrane remains in fixed contact with the anode without seepage or uncovered openings, and the evolution of gas is confined to the rear of the anode. Thereby, the difficulties of voltage loss which occasionally occur due to accumulations of gas between the anode and the membrane are avoided, and more constant cell voltages can be achieved.
Som angitt ovenfor er anodedelen en porøs anode, fortrinnsvis As indicated above, the anode part is a porous anode, preferably
en netting- eller gitter-anode. En slik porøs anode er nødvendig for å tillate gjennomgang av ioner, f.eks. natrium-ioner gjennom den kationaktive permsellektive membran fra anolyttaydelingen til katolyttavdelingen. a mesh or lattice anode. Such a porous anode is necessary to allow passage of ions, e.g. sodium ions through the cation-active permselective membrane from the anolyte compartment to the catholyte compartment.
For hensiktsmessig behandling av en skillevegg-membran før montering i en elektrolysecelle neddykkes i henhold til oppfinnelsen et membranflak med forut bestemte dimensjoner, til-strekkelig til fullstendig å dekke den anodedel hvorpå membranen skal anbringes i barriereforhold, i kokende vann i vanligvis For appropriate treatment of a partition membrane before installation in an electrolysis cell, according to the invention, a membrane sheet with predetermined dimensions, sufficient to completely cover the anode part on which the membrane is to be placed in barrier conditions, is immersed in boiling water in usually
Deretter 1 to 4 hours, to make the membrane soft and pliable. Then
Membranen the softened membrane is placed on a suitable frame with dimensions that approximately correspond to the dimensions of the anode part. The membrane
Sidene av membranen strekkes, deretter og 1 klemmes til -sidene stretched diagonally and clamped at the corners of the frame. The sides of the membrane are stretched, then and 1 is clamped to the -sides
The corner clamps are then removed, leaving a flat, smooth surface. After stretching, the membrane is allowed to dry on the frame After applying an adhesive, e.g. an epoxy adhesive, on the flange of the anode part, the frame is placed in position on the anode part so that the membrane surface is brought into contact with the side of the anode^,^v part which has adhesive applied. The frame is pressed against and clamped onto the adhesive-coated flange. After curing the adhesive in e.g. After 1 to 3 hours, the clamps are removed and the frame is lifted away from the membrane, which is now firmly connected to the flange of the anode part. Preferably, excess parts of the membrane that hang over the anode part are cut off and the edges are glued to the flange with a suitable adhesive.
The method of the invention can also be used when manufacturing a buffer section in an electrolysis cell with three compartments. The assembly of the membrane in this context shall be described with reference to fig. 2, which schematically shows three frames constituting a buffer section, namely a first frame 71 with tabs 74 along the sides of the frame, a second frame 72 with holes corresponding to the tabs 74 on the first frame 71, along the side edges of the frame, as well as a liquid outlet 76 and a liquid inlet 77, and a third frame 73 which is also provided with holes 78 along its sides to receive the tabs 74 on the first frame. Two membranes sized to fit over the end surfaces of the second frame are immersed in boiling water until the membranes have become soft and pliable. The softened membranes are then placed on each stretch frame / stretched diagonally and clamped to the corners of the frame. The membrane overhang is pulled over the side edges of the frame and clamped against the sides. The corner clamps are removed and the stretched membranes are placed after drying on each side of the above-described second frame 72, which has a layer of adhesive applied to it. The membranes are then clamped firmly against the side flanges of the frame 72 and the adhesive is allowed to harden or "dry". After the clamps and tension frames have been removed, the membranes are then left firmly connected to each side of the frame 72. Further holes are punched in the membranes corresponding to the holes 75 in the further frame 72. The assembly of the buffer section is then completed by placing the first frame 71 on one side of the frame 72 with the pins 74 passed through the holes 7.5 and the third frame 73 on the opposite side of the frame 72 with the holes 78 threaded over the pins 74.
In this way, a buffer section is obtained through which a diluted buffer solution can circulate and which is separated from the anode compartment by means of a cation-active permselective barrier and from the cathode compartment by means of a further cation-active permselective barrier, as shown in fig. 3, When an appropriate voltage is applied between the anode and the cathode in this 3-compartment cell, an ion current is created from the anode compartment through the first cation-active permselective barrier into and through the buffer compartment, as well as through the second cation-active permselective barrier into the cathode compartment. Leakage of anolyte and anodic products into the cathode compartment is prevented to a significant extent, and likewise the back migration of catholyte and cathodic products is prevented by the cation-active permselective barriers and the buffer compartment.
The present method according to the invention has desirable advantages over the previously known methods for inserting barriers in electrolytic cells, as the treatment and assembly of membranes according to the invention does not entail a significant increase in the half-cell voltages across the anode and cathode sections of the cell . The membranes remain fixed in position and do not form folds and/or wrinkles as is common with previously known membrane assemblies.
