5 De uitvinding heeft betrekking op een slijpsteen en meer in het bijzonder op kubische boriumnitride (CBN) bevattende slijpstenen.
CBN-slijpstenen bestaan uit een CBN-korrelmassa die in een hard conglomeraat is ingebed. Dergelijke slijpstenen bevatten, als het DBN-gehal:e in het algemeen tenminste 70 vol.# bedraagt, gewoonlijk een tweede of bin-10 dende fase.
Het Amerikaanse octrooischrift 3-7^3-^89 beschrijft kubische boriumnitridebevattende slijpstenen die met een gecementeerde carbidedrager verbonden zijn. De steen bevat een grote hoeveelheid kubische boriumnitride·· kristallen en een tweede metaalfase die aluminiumatomen en atomen van ten-15 minste één legeringselement bevat, bestaande uit nikkel, kobalt, mangaan, ijzer, vanadium of chroom, waarbij het totale aantal atomen van aluminium en legeringselement meer dan 1 gew·# van het aanwezige kubische boriumnitrice bedraagt.
Het Amerikaanse octrooischrift 3.9^.398 beschrijft een kubist he 20 boriumnitridebevattende slijpsteen, waarin de tweede of bindende fase bestaet uit aluminium, of een aluminiumlegering, en een keramisch materiaal, bijvoorbeeld siliciumnitride. Tijdens de vervaardiging van de slijpsteen vindt tussen aluminium, of de aluminiumlegering, en het keramisch materiaal een wisselwerking plaats, waardoor een hard materiaal ontstaat.
25 Het Amerikaanse octrooischrift ^.110.084 beschrijft een werk wijze voor de bereiding van een slijpmassa, bestaande uit CBN-kristallen, aluminium, of een aluminiumlegering, en een keramisch siliciumcarbidesub-straat. De samenstelling wordt bij een naar verhouding lage druk vervaardigt waarbij vergroeiing van de elkaar rakende CBN-kristallen niet mogelijk is.
30 Het Britse octrooischrift 1.513*990 beschrijft de bereiding van een zeer hard materiaal, bestaande uit een vaste oplossing van een legerend toevoegsel in dicht gepakt gemodificeerd boriumnitride, waarbij het legeringtoevoegsel uit tenminste een element uit de derde groep van het Periodiek Systeem of een boride daarvan bestaat, dat in staat is tetroediscle 35 bindingen te vormen. Verontreinigingen 0,01 tot 2 3 Het materiaal is dus een vaste oplossing en geen massa van CBN-deeltjes met een tweede of bindende fase· Men vervaardigt het materiaal door het juiste mengsel van hexagonaal of wurzietachtig boriumnitride en het legeringstoevoegsel aan hoge druk en temperatuur te onderwerpen. Hoewel aangegeven is dat men bij een temperatuur van slechts 1500°C en een druk 10 van slechts 50 kilobar het gewenste harde materiaal verkrijgt, worden in de voorbeelden aanzienlijk hogere waarden toegepast. Dat in de praktijk een hogere temperatuur en druk nodig is ligt voor de hand daar praktisch het gehele hexagonale boriumnitride of wurzietachtige boriumnitride in de kubisch i vorm moeten worden omgezet.
15 Bovendien kan het volgens het Britse octrooischrift bereide harde materiaal in verband met de extreme bereidingsomstandigheden geen groter volume bezitten dan enkele kubieke millimeter. Het materiaal kan dus slechts als korrelvormig slijpmateriaal en niet in de vorm van een slijpsteen worden toegepast. Slijpstenen zijn grote slijplichamen die voor slijp®, 20 afdraaien, snijden en andere slijpbewerkingen worden toegepast.
De onderhavige uitvinding heeft dus betrekking op een slijpsteen bestaande uit een kubische boriumnitridedeeltjes bevattende massa en een tweede fase gebonden in een hard conglomeraat, waarbij de elkaar rakendu kubische boriumnitridedeeltjes door vergroeiing tot een massa met elkaar 25 verbonden zijn. Het gehalte aan kubische boriumnitride in de slijpsteen bedraagt tenminste 80 gew.$, terwijl de tweede fase in hoofdzaak uit aluminiun-nitride en/of -diboride bestaat.
De tweede fase (of bindmassa zoals het ook wel wordt aangeduic.) bestaat in hoofdzaak uit aluminiumnitride en/of aluminiumdiboride. Dit be-30 tekent dat behalve aluminiumnitride en/of aluminiumdiboride (het reaktie- produkt van aluminium en CBN) geen andere belangrijke elementen aanwezig zi; n, met uitzondering van sporenelementen.
Het CBN-gehalte van de slijpsteen bedraagt bij voorkeur 85 tol 95 gewo#.
35 Verder voorziet de uitvinding in een werkwijze voor de vervaar- 800 1 6 30 - 3_ diging van een uit kubische boriumnitride bestaande slijpsteen, waarbij men een uit kubische boriumnitridedeeltjes bestaande massa in aanraking brengt met een aluminiummassa en de gevormde reaktiemassa in een reaktiezone plaatst waarin de druk tot 50 a 65 kilobar en de temperatuur tot 1400 a 1600°C ver-5 hoogd wordt, tot uit de reaktiemassa een slijpsteen is ontstaan, die men ui: de reaktiezone verwijdert·
De reaktiezone bevindt zich in een normale inrichting voor hoge temperatuur en druk. Gewoonlijk plaatst men de reaktiemassa in een cap* sule die in de reaktiezone wordt aangebracht waarna men de temperatuur en 10 druk verhoogt·
Voor de vorming van de slijpsteen houdt men de hoge temperatuur en druk meestal gedurende tenminste 5 minuten in stand.
Deze toestand van hoge temperatuur en druk wordt meestal niet langer dan 60 minuten in stand gehouden om de inrichting niet te beschadigen 15 in de praktijk meestal minder dan 50 minuten.
De slijpstenen kunnen op de bekende wijze gewonnen worden waarbij men, als een groot aantal slijpstenen in cilindervormige capsules zijn gevormd, bijvoorbeeld de capsules fijnmaalt of afpelt en de slijpstenen ver·· wijdert. Tussen de slijpsteenmassa's zijn geschikte scheidingen aangebracht 20 om te voorkomen dat zij zich aan elkaar vasthechten.
De reaktiemassa bestaat uitsluitend uit CBN-deeltjes en aluminium als men van de vanzelfsprekend aanwezige sporen verontreinigingen afziet* De reaktiemassa bestaat bij voorkeur uit de CBN-deeltjes bevattende massa, in aanraking met een aluminiumlaag bijvoorbeeld in de vorm van foelio 25 of poeder. In dit geval infiltreert tijdens de bereiding het aluminium in de CBN-massa. De reaktiemassa kan ook uit een mengsel van CBN-deeltjes en poedervormig aluminium bestaan.
Gebleken is dat de CBN-slijpmassa volgens de uitvinding uitstekende slijpeigenschappen bezit en in dit opzicht de in de handel verkrijg ;-50 bare CBN-slijpstenen overtreft. De uitzonderlijke eigenschappen van de stentn kunnen naar wordt aangenomen aan de volgende faktoren worden toegeschreven.
Tijdens de vervaardiging van de slijpstenen worden de CBN-dee]-tjes plastisch vervormd, waardoor zij zich verdichten. Zoals gezegd bedraagi het CBN-gehalte van de slijpsteen tenminste 80 gew.%.
55 Bij de toegepaste temperatuur en druk vergroeien de aan elkaar 8001630 _ jtr grenzende CBN-deeltjes met elkaar, waardoor zij met elkaar versmelten of aan elkaar hechten en een ononderbroken mozaïek of vergroeide massa vormen.
De vergroeiing is zo werkzaam dat men heeft vastgesteld dat de breuklijn door de slijpsteen transgranulair en niet intergranulair verloopt.
5 De tweede aluminiumfase speelt ook een belangrijke rol. Tijde is de vervaardiging wordt bij het opvullen van de ruimte tussen de deeltjes druk op de niet rakende CBN-oppervlakken uitgeoefend, waardoor omzetting in hexagonale boriumnitride, die de slijpsteenmassa ernstig zou verzwakken, voorkomen wordt. De slijpstenen blijken bij rontgenanalyse geen aantoonbare 10 hoeveelheid, dat wil zeggen minder dan 0,5 gew.$, hexagonale boriumnitride te bevatten. Het aluminium heeft ook de belangrijke taak een medium te verschaffen waarin diffusie van borium en stikstof kan plaatsvinden waardoor de vergroeiing van elkaar rakende deeltjes bevorderd wordt. Tenslotte reageert aluminium met CBN onder vorming van aluminiumdiboride en aluminium-15 nitride, waardoor het binden van de samenstelling bevorderd wordt.
De slijpstenen volgens de uitvinding kunnen groot of klein zijn maar bezitten in het algemeen een volume van tenminste *K) kubieke mill:.-meter, in het bijzonder 100 tot 1500 kubieke millimeter. De slijpstenen kunnen op zichzelf of bevestigd op een geschikte drager, bijvoorbeeld wolf-20 raaracarbide, gebruikt worden.
De uitvinding wordt nu aan de hand van de volgende voorbeelden toegelicht onder verwijzing naar Fig. 1, een 2000-voudige fotografische vergroting van een gedeelte van de slijpsteen volgens de uitvinding.
VOORBEELD I
25 Men brengt een uit CBN-deeltjes met afmetingen van 8 tot 20 micron bestaande uitgangsmassa aan op aluminiumfoelie en plaatst het geheel in een reaktiecapsule van een normale inrichting voor hoge temperaturen en druk. De gevulde capsule wordt in de reaktiezone van de inrichting geplaatst en men verhoogt de druk in de reaktiezone gedurende 15 minuten tot 55 kilo-30 bar en de temperatuur tot ongeveer 1500°C. Men laat de druk en temperatuur daarna weer tot normaal dalen en verwijdert op de bekende wijze de CBN-slijj-massa in de vorm van een schijf uit de capsule. De slijpsteen blijkt bij analyse een CBN-gehalte te bezitten van 93 gew.#, terwijl de resterende 7 gew.# uit aluminiumnitride en aluminiumdiboride bestaat. Bij rontgenanalyse 35 blijkt geen aantoonbare hoeveelheid hexagonale boriumnitride of metallisch 800 f 6 30 - 5 - * aluminium aanwezig te zijn. Het volume van de slijpsteen bedraagt ongeveer 750 kubieke millimeter.
De slijpsteen wordt gebroken en gepolijst en het gepolijste oppervlak onderzocht, waarbij als verbinding tussen de elkaar rakende deel-5 tjes een vergroeide massa wordt waargenomen. In Fig. 1 is een foto weergegeven van het geëtste oppervlak. Het vergroeide CBN is aangegeven met 10 terwijl de alurainium-bevattende tweede fase in de geëtste holtes met 12 is aangegeven.
Het blijkt dat de slijpsteen zelfs in ongebakken toestand 10 uitstekende slijpeigenschappen bezit, zoals uit de navolgende gegevens bli;kt. VOORBEELD II

VOORBEELD VII
Men vergelijkt de slijpeigenschappen van de volgens Voorbeeld I vervaardigde slijpsteen met in de handel verkrijgbare CBN-slijpstenen en 35 met een slijpmassa die bereid is volgens de werkwijze beschreven in het Amerikaanse octrooischrift 3.9Mf.398« De in de handel verkrijgbare uit 800 1 6 30 _ 6 _ < * CBNTinassa en een'tweede kobalt/aluminiumfase bestaande slijpsteen wordt op een gecementeerde carbidedrager aangebracht. De slijpsteen werd geleverd door General Electric Company en is naar wordt aangenomen vervaardigd volgens het Amerikaanse octrooischrift 3«7^3.^89.
5 De drie slijpstenen worden gebruikt voor het bewerken van ge hard D3-staal met een Rockwell-hardheid van 5^ tot 56· De bewerking wordt in alle gevallen voortgezet tot een vlak stukje van 0,2 mm uit de slijpsteen gesleten is. De hiervoor benodigde tijden zijn:

Uit de resultaten volgt dat de volgens Voorbeeld I vervaardigde slijpsteen bij het afslijpen van gehard D3-staal betere resultaten levert 15 dan de twee andere slijpstenen.
Bij het slijpen van gehard D-3-staal met een Rockwell»hardheic van 58 blijkt dat de levensduur van de slijpsteen volgens de uitvinding 2¾ maal die van de slijpsteen volgens het Amerikaanse octrooischrift 3.7^3.^89 bedraagt e 20 8001630

Slijpsteen bestaande uit een kubische boriumnitridedeeltjes-bevattende massa en een tweede tot een hard conglomeraat gebonden fase, waa:?- 5 bij het gehalte aan kubische boriumnitride tenminste 80 gew.% bedraagt, met het kenmerk, dat de elkaar rakende kubische boriumnitridedeelt j es in een vergroeide massa met elkaar verbonden zijn en de tweede fase in hoofdzaak uit aluminiumnitride en/of -diboride bestaat·
2. Slijpsteen volgens conclusie 1,raet het kenmerk, 10 dat het kubische boriumnitridegehalte van de slijpsteen 85 tot 95 gew.% bedraagt.
3. Slijpsteen volgens conclusie 1 of 2, met het kenmerk, dat het volume tenminste bo kubieke millimeter bedraagt· if. Slijpsteen volgens conclusie 1 of 2, met het kenmerk, 15 dat het volume 100 tot 1500 kubieke millimeter bedraagt.

Werkwijze voor de vervaardiging van kubische.boriumnitride be·· vattende slijpstenen, met het kenmerk, dat men een uit kubische boriumnitridedeeltjes bestaande massa in aanraking brengt met een aluminium- massa onder vorming van een reaktiemassa, de reaktiemassa in een reaktiezont 20 plaatst, de druk van de reaktiezone verhoogt tot 50-65 kilobar en de temperatuur tot 1*f00 - 1600°C tot uit de reaktiemassa een slijpsteenmassa is ontstaan, waarna men de slijpsteenmassa uit de reaktiezone verwijdert.
6. Werkwijze volgens conclusie 5» met het kenmerk, dat de reaktiemassa bestaat uit een massa kubische boriumnitrideslijpdeel- 25 tjes in aanraking met een aluminiumlaag·
7. Werkwijze volgens conclusie 6, met het kenmerk, dat de aluminiumlaag aluminiumfoelie is.
8. Werkwijze volgens conclusie 5»®et het kenmerk, dat de reaktiemassa bestaat uit een mengsel van kubische boriumnitridedeel- 30 tjes en aluminiumpoeder.
9· Werkwijze volgens één of meer der conclusies 5 tot 8, m e t het kenmerk, dat de verhoogde temperatuur en druk 5 tot 60 minuten in dand wordt gehouden. 35 * — 800 1 6 30
