Abstract

A gas component is adsorbed in a pressure swing adsorption process in which the gas mixt. is passed through a bed of adsorbent material and an adsorbent zone is created in the bed and gradually displaced through the bed. Just as the adsorbent zone reaches the farthest limit of the bed in the direction of flow of the gases, the pressure in the adsorbent vessel is lowered by initially continuing to remove gas from the discharge end and then removing gas from the feed end and finally purging the vessel with low pressure gas, pref. the same gas as that obtd. from the initial pressure redn., until the adsorbed component is entirely removed from the bed. The vessel is then brought up to pressure again and the process is restarted. In order to obtain optimum utilisation of the adsorbent bed with the minimum possible length of adsorbent zone and correct exit velocities, the flow is arranged radially through the bed which is contained in a cylindrical vessel. The radial flow enables optimum utilisation of the bed to be achieved without increasing the dia. of the cylindrical vessel.
