Abstract

Apparatus for salvaging liquids and liquefiable materials, particularly crude petroleum or petroleum products, from the closed compartments of a sunken ship comprises (a) a submerisable capsule, pressurised to balance the pressure of the surrounding water, and means for lowering it to the sunk ship and raising it e.g. after salvage is complete (b) means for fixing the capsule releasably to the sunken ship and for drilling a hole in the hull or compartment, sealed against ingress of water to the compartment or the interior of the capsule. (c) means for pumping oil from the compartment to the capsule and further means for pumping the oil from the capsule to surface storage e.g. on a salvage vessel. (d) means for carrying out the above operations and for controlling the pump units by remote control from the surface. Dispenses with the use of divers and therefore permits salvage operations at greater depths than are feasible for a diver.
