Abstract
Pumps deliver fuel to injectors in each of the engine cylinders and are connected via inlet valves to the fuel supply, the volume delivered being variable. The valve in the injector has its stroke varied by a control device, and is coupled to the armature of one or more solenoids. The valve can be coupled to the free end of a pivoting solenoid armature, which has more iron at the free end than at that nearest the pivot point, to avoid magnetic saturation. The design offers great simplification as compared with the conventional method using a camshaft to actuate the valves.
