Abstract
Copolymers containing OH groups are prepared by addition copolymerisation in aqueous dispersion of a mixture of (I) and OH-contg. ethylenically unsaturated ester of formula I and (II) at least one additional ethylenically unsatd. monomer (R is an -ethylenically unsatd. group; R1 is a group without ethylenic unsaturation, n is 0 or 1 X is oxygen when n is 1, or is sulphur or oxygen when n is 0). Specifically the RC(=O)- group of I is pref. derived from acrylic acid, and the R1C(=O)- group is pref. derived from an acid of formula III. (where R1 is CH3; and R2 and R3 are each C1-16 alkyl). The ester I is derived from the reaction of acrylic acid with a glycidyl ester of formula IV (n=1). The glycidyl ester is pref. deived from acids II having 9-11 C atoms. The comonomer II is pref. vinyl chloride. The wt. ratio of I/II in the copolymer is 20/80 to 40/60. Polymerisation is carried out at 60-90 C, in the presence of a free radical initiator, and a chain transfer agent, pref. in emulsion. The copolymer is pref. washed with an organic diluent.
