Abstract

The reel can be dis-assembled and has adjoining circular circumferential grooves over the entire length of the core. The grooves are parallel circles and not a single helical groove. the material to be wound is preferably fed from a reel or virtual point at a distance of at least 30x, preferably 40x the maximum would coil diameter without using external reciprocating guide means. Each ridge between adjoining grooves may be provided with a recess at the point where change-over points appear after winding one layer as described. These recesses may be positioned on a helix at an angle of 0 deg. to 10 deg. relative to the change-over direction, and have a tangential length of 15x the groove pitch. The reel core may be provided with wedge shaped elements and hydraulic means to provide core expansion.
