Abstract

1340314 Cross-wound packages WINDINGS INC 10 April 1972 16405/72 Heading D1J [Also in Division B8] A package of elongate flexible material comprises a plurality of wound layers each formed of a plurality of Figure 8's having cross-overs progressing around the package, the package having an axial opening which in cross-section perpendicular to the package axis is of 'ovaloid' shape with elongate sides and curved ends, the package also having a radial opening between the axial opening and the exterior, the inner end 18 of the material being led out through said radial opening. By the term 'ovaloid' is meant a shape varying between true oval, a parallel sided figure with round ends and a dumb-bell shape. The package is wound on a machine comprising a rotatable mandrel, and a reciprocating guide for the elongate flexible material which guide completes one reciprocation for each two revolutions of the mandrel and out of phase therewith, and is characterised in that the mandrel is ovaloid in cross-section. In a preferred embodiment, the mandrel comprises two spaced apart rollers 8. To assist take-off of the material from the interior of the package a tube 24 is preferably inserted in the radial opening. The package may be so formed that the radial thickness of the iayers is greater in the elongate sides than at the curved ends. The package may be placed in a cover 20 which compresses the package to give a. dumb-bell shaped interior.
