Abstract

1,144,229. Producing tubular objects by winding. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 Sept., 1966 [27 Sept., 1965], No. 42799/66. Heading B8G. [Also in Division F2] A reciprocating mandrel, Fig. 3 (showing a cross-section through one embodiment acrossthe axis of reciprocation) on which filamentary or tapelike material can be wound to produce a tubular article, comprises a first group of elongated elements 11a that are movable as a group in their longitudinal direction; and a second group of elongated elements 11b that are movable as a group in their longitudinal direction; characterized in that one group moves forwards whilst the other groun moves backwards and vice versa, and that the elements 11a, 11b comprise expandable portions 13 that expand radially outwards when their associated elements are moving forwards and retract radially inwardly when their associated elements are moving backwards. As shown the expandable portions 13 are inflatable tubes. Each element 11a of the first group is positioned between two elements 11b of the second group. In a modified construction each element 11a, 11b comprises an inward section and an outward section, there being means to (a) move the outward section radially outwards as they move forwards and (b) move the outward sections radially inwards as they move backwards. The outward sections may have their radial setting controlled by pneumatic or hydraulic means, or mechanically or by hinge connections. The reciprocating motions of the elements 11a, 11b may be brought about by screw means; or by rollers running along cams or grooves of a rotating disc. The mandrel may be non-rotatable, the tapes of filaments to be wound thereon can be drawn off from one or more reels or bobbins on a turntable rotating round the mandrel. Alternatively the reels or bobbins can be in a fixed position and the mandrel rotated. The mandrel is particularly suitable for the production of tubes from filaments, tapes, mats and the like, impregnated with a thermosetting setting resin.
