Description

With both single and double sockets, the use of pipes of thermoplastic plastics, especially of extruded pipes, requires that the sockets are produced, or formed, integrally with the pipes, by a separate operation which requires additional time and expenses. Moreover, the method of widening the end of the already manufactured pipe has the disadvantage that the wall of the pipe becomes thinner and for this reason, and in order to avoid a loss of strength, additional reinforcing measures become necessary, for example, sliding on a sleeve or the like must be provided. | The invention has the object. o avoid the j drawbacks mentioned above. According to the invention 1 this is achieved by a process for integrally forming sockets in pipes continuously manufactured by spirally winding a pro-filed strip of a thermoplastic synthetic resin onto a drum which Ί rotates and serves as the winding mandrel, wherein one rim of the profiled strip exhibits a tongue and the other fcim exhibits a groove in a bead for receiving the tongue for mutual linking therebetween, which comprises: (i) spirally winding the profiled strip of thermo- ·■ plastic synthetic resin onto said drum to form a main pipe section of a given diameter; , (ii) increasing the diameter of said main pipe section to form a socket section of enlarged diameter linked to the main pipe section by a conically tapering section, by placing a member having a conicaliy widening portion between the drum and the profiled strip during the continuous winding thereof, 35171/2 - 4 - each case over the entire periphery, this ring being moved alon the periphery of the drum in correspondence with the pipe take-off speed; or (b) a winding band whose thickness diminishes a both ends, which is interposed between the drum and the profiled band in the windin operation and is displaceable on the drum at the speed and in the direction of withdrawal of the finished pipes; (iil) severing the thus formed socket section in the middle; and (iv) withdrawing said member.
The process according to tte invention whieh permits the continuous production of pipes end sookets, including double sockets, can be carried out by means of various devices.
According to one embodiment of the invention the device for carryin out the process comprises a drum serving as a windin mandrel, and at lleast one pressure roll and also comprising a ring slidable on the rear end of the drum in the direction of withdrawal of the finished pipe, with the same speed as the latter, which ring is axially split and is conically bevelled at its front and rear ends over its whole circumerence.
According to another embodiment there is provided a device which comprises a drum serving as a winding mandrel, 35171/2 / and at least one pressure roll, and means for interposing a winding band whose thickness diminishes at both ends between the drum and the profiled band in the winding operation so as to be dleplaoeable on the drum at the speed and in the direction of withdrawal of the finished pipes.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing in which: Fig. 1 is a fragmentary axial section of an apparatus including a slip-on ring 3?lg. 2 is a part-sectional fragmentary elevation of an apparatus with a winding band.
Accordin to Pig. 1 a longitudinally split slip-on ring 2 is slid onto the rear end of a rotatable drum 1. The front and rear ends of the ring 2 are
