Abstract

1389212 Expandable mandrels BRITISH STEEL CORP 21 April 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 4928/71 Heading F2U A collapsible cylindrical mandrel 13 (e.g. for use as a core on to which a continuous glass fibre wetted with resin, is wound to form a pipe) comprises an axially extending wedge 17 forming part of the cylindrical surface, and retractable radially to form a gap 17A between two surface parts 14, 15 hinged (e.g. at a hinge 16 along a line parallel to and diametrically opposite the wedge) (e.g. by the flexibility of the thinned centre part of the hinge 16). The radial movement of the wedge 17 may be by axially distributed rods moved simultaneously by rotating a shaft 55. Movement of the ends 26, 27 of the parts 14, 15 may be controlled by hydraulic jacks 23. The wedge and ends 26, 27 may each be held in any of their positions by tightening nuts (37, 42, 43), Fig. 7 (not shown), on studs therein extending axially through slots in an end plate.
