Abstract
1,038,562. Rocket motors. THIOKOL CHEMICAL CORPORATION. May 10, 1963 [May 10, 1962], No. 18589/63. Heading F3A. A rocket motor comprises a moulded solid propellant grain having a head plate and exhaust nozzle secured thereto and a motor casing consisting of a filamentary material wound around the grain and overlapping the peripheral ends of the head plate and exhaust nozzle. A precast solid propellant grain 11 is fused at one end to a curved head plate 12 and an exhaust nozzle 14 at the other end. A filament tape 22 of glass, plastics or metallic wire with an epoxide bonding agent is wound on to the grain in successive layers and extends over the peripheral edges of the head plate 12 and nozzle 14 to retain these in place. The bonding agent is then cured so that the casing and grain become an integral structure. The grain is moulded with a tapered star-shaped axial cavity 17 and to facilitate winding the tape a mandrel 18 may be secured in the cavity and mounted for rotation in a lathe. As well as circular windings being applied as shown in Fig. 1, longitudinal windings are described which provide better retention of the end pieces. Other bonding agents are phenolics, polyesters and silicones.
