Abstract

The baldes are stacked together and connected to a negative potential, relative to a spiral anode, of initially 100-1000V, the whole being enclosed in a vacuum bell jar at a press. of 0.05-10 mm of Hf so that the surface may be thoroughly cleaned, the atmos. in the jar being free of N2 at this stage. A mixt. of a gas which will react with one of the metals in the alloy of the cutting edge, with a reducing or inert gas, e.g. H2 or A, is then fed into the jar with the same pressure but with the voltage reduced to 50-800V. The gas reacts esp. with a Gp. IIIA-VIIA or Gp. VIII metal, esp. Ti, V, Cr, Fe or Al (or less commonly Co, Ni or Mn) to form nitride, carbide or boride. The active gases used are respectively - N2; methane, butane or other hydrocarbon gas; borazine or borane. Relatively cheap mass prodn. method.
