CONSTITUTION:A surface layer of cermet contg. 40-90wt% carbide of one or more among Ti, Zr and Hf as a hard substance and 5-50wt% binding metal based on an iron group metal is nitrided within <=1mm. depth while providing a negative concn. gradient to the nitrogen content of the nitrided layer from the surface toward the interior. The cermet may contain one or more kinds of hard substances or binding metals other than the above-mentioned ones. For example, the hard substance is Ti carbide and the iron group metal is Ni, the hard substance in the secondary component is one or more among the nitrides and carbonitrides of the IVa and Va group metals in the periodic table and the Va and VIa group metals, and the binding metal is one or more among the IVa, Va and VIa group metals and Al.
