Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve wear resistance without damaging toughness in a surface coated tool by the method, wherein a base metal is made of hard components of specific metals respectively and combined metals, being contained more in a surface part than in a core part of the base metal, and a coated layer, being harder than the base metal, is applied on the base metal with a specified thickness. CONSTITUTION:A base metal is made of more than two kinds of group in its hard components consisting of carbide and carbonitride of the metal groups of 4a, 5a, 6a in the periodic table, and is a cermet containing 3-30vol% combined metal, based on the whole of the base metal, consisting eventially of iron group metals. The content of the combined metal in a surface part of the base metal, i.e. from the surface up to the specified depth, is 4-50vol%, and there is a specific depth, wherein the content of the combined metal is by >30% more than that of the core part excluding the surface part from the base metal, within 100mum from the surface. The coated layer is harder than the core part of base metal, the thickness of the coated layer is 0.5-40mum.
