Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled member capable of elongating the life of a cutting tool by coating the surface of a substrate having a specified composition consisting essentially of an Fe or Cr group binding metal, carbide of W or the like and nitride or the like of a specified group metal in the periodic table with a layer of TiN or the like of a specified thickness with a TiC layer of a specified thickness in-between. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a cermet substrate is coated with a 0.5-20mum thick single layer of TiN, TiCN or the like or a double layer of them with a 0.5-10mum thick TiC layer contg. a diffused and dispersed substrate binding metal as a middle layer in-between to obtain the titled member with superior resistance to heat plastic deformation, rake surface wear and impact. The substrate consists of, by vol., 5- 40% one or more kinds of binding metals selected from the Fe and Cr group metals and Al, 5-30% one or more among cabides of W, Mo, etc. and soluble carbides of two or more kinds of them, 10-40% one ore more among nitrides, oxides, etc. of the IVa-VIa group metals in the periodic table, and the balance TiC and impurities.
