Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the toughness, wear resistance and plastic resistance by making up the surface of the solid carbide base body by a soft layer made of WC- iron group system in such a manner as to be softer than the inside of the base body and very tough with the nitrogen solidly solved in the connection phase of the soft layer. CONSTITUTION:On the surface of the WC-based solid carbide material, formed is a film layer 1-20mu thick as a single layer made of one of the following: metal belonging to groups IVa, Va and VIa on the periodic table, carbonide, nitride and oxide of Al, Si and B and a solid solution of two or more thereof or a multiple layer made of two or more thereof. The inside of the base body is composed of 40-95% of WC, 2-30% of NaCl type crystal structure compound made of one or more of nitride and carbonitride of metal belonging to group IVa, Va and VIa on the periodic table and ferro-group metal for the rest. Here, it is composed of 65- 95% of WC, 0.01-2% of solid solution of N and ferro-group metal for the rest at the depth below the surface thereof so as to be softer by 5-50% in terms of vickers hardness while increased by 10'200% in the connection phase as compared with the inside of the base body.
