Abstract

Alpha-Alkenes are (co)polymsd. with a minor amt. of a polyunstd. hydrocarbon, in a liquid diluent and/or liquid monomer, in presence of a catalyst obtd. by (a) reacting RmAlX3-m, where R is a 1-30C hydrocarbon gp., X is halogen and m is an integer or fraction 3, with an organomagnesium cpd., in an inert diluent and in presence of a carrier, and then (b) combining the reaction mixt. with a Ti(IV) cpd. and/or other transition metal cpd., esp. a V cpd., and, after redn. of at least a major part of the Ti(IV) and/or other transition metal, possibly washing and/or heating the catalyst suspension, and activating the suspension with an organoaluminium cpd. High yields are obtd. Catalyst residues do not have to be removed from the polymer. The polymer has greater particle size (is not 100 mu) than when using a catalyst prepd. in absence of a carrier. The particle size can be regulated by choice of the carrier and the catalyst components.
