Abstract

Latices are prepd. by emulsion polymerising at 25-100 degrees C and pH 7 an aq. dispersion of a monomer mixture comprising (1) a monomer compsn. selected from (a) a water-sol. salt of a monohydric aminoalcohol half ester of an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. dicarboxylic acid opt. mixed wtih a 3-7C alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid and a monohydric aminoalcohol ester of diester of an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. dicarboxylic acid, and (2) at least one water insol. ethylenically unsatd. monomer which will undergo addn. polymerisation to form water insol. polymers. The amt. of aminoalcohol ester is sufficient to give 0.0085-0.85 wt.% of nitrogen (based on the total compsn) and the amt. of unsatd. acid is sufficient to give 0.26-5.2 wt.% of carboxylic acid gps. Compsn. may be treated wtih a non-anionic surfactant and a water soluble base to raise the pH to >8 and form a staple anionic latex with improved adhesive props.
