Abstract
Ethylene glycol (esp. that recovered during the prodn. of linear polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate) is purified by treating it for 10-200 mins (esp. 40-120 mins) at 30-190 degrees C (50-100 degrees C) in the press. of 0.5-5 wt. % water, with 0.01-1 wt. % each of an alkali metal hydroxide and an alkali metal sulphite and fractionally distilling the product. Thus 5 dm3 recovered glycol contg. 0.54% water, 1200 mg/kg aldehyde and 1650 mg/kg free acid was treated at 60 degrees C with 20g NaOH and 20g Na2SO3 dissolved in 150 cm3 water for 90 mins. The product was fractionally distilled to give 80% of a middle fraction comprising glycol of fibre quality.
