Abstract
A gas-in-liquid foam is prepared remote from the bore-hole from ammonia (0.05-10%) and pref. air, N2, C2H4 and/or C2H6 and an aqs. solution of (0.005 to 10 parts) a foaming agent. The aqs. soln. contains pref. 89-99 parts water and 0.05-1 parts R(O)mSO3M where R = 8-26C alkyl or R'O(CH2CHO)n (R'=8-26C alkyl) m = 0 or 1 n = 1-15, and M = NH4+ or alkali cation e.g. 10-20C alkyl benzene sulphonate salt. Used in drilling for gas, oil, minerals etc. Advantages are low energy consumption when washing with a foam, no erosion of bore-hole walls. The ammonia stabilises the foam to mechanical shock, heat etc. and enables it to be pumped. Depending on amount of ammonia present, either a wet or dry foam is obtained.
