Abstract

A process for continuous purification of crude terephthalic acid by recrystallization from a solvent consisting of acetic, propionic or butyric acids or aqueous solutions of the acids containing not more than 50% water using at least two crystallising vessels in series, in which a solution of 6-40 parts of crude terephthalic acid dissolved in 100 parts of solvent is adiabatically evaporated in the first vessel to lose 10-60% of solvent, and past of the acid precipitates giving a suspension, which is transferred to the second vessel and optionally to further vessels, in each case 10-60% solvent being adiabatically evaporated, terphthalic acid being crystallised in each vessel from a solution not exceeding 60%. Recrystallisation from lower fatty acids gives high purity, little decomposition or loss of solvent.
