905,990. Storing liquefied gases. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 14, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13355/60. Class 8(2). [Also in Group XXXIII] A liquefied gas transport vessel e.g., a tanker (see Group XXXIII) comprises one or more storage chambers 1, Fig. 1, having walls 2 of thermally insulating material e.g., wood lined with impermeable material 3 e.g. steel and the walls are held spaced from the partitions 5, 5a of the tanker structure by insulating ribs 7 and sealing ribs 9; the latter serving to divide the interspace into a plurality of compartments 10 adapted to be charged with an inert gas through valved ducts 11, 12, 13 fed from a manifold 14. The pressure of the inert gas in each compartment is normally maintained just below that of the stored gas and an increase in the inert gas pressure shown by gauges 15 is regarded as an indication of leakage of stored gas through the lined wall 2 and is countered by increasing the pressure of the inert gas in the appropriate compartment 10. The vapour space of each tank 1 is connected to a heat exchanger 18, 18a, Fig. 2, supplied with refrigerant from a line 19, 19a containing a pressure-opening valve 20, 20a responsive to the pressure in each said vapour space; the so-warmed coolant being discharged through lines 21, 21a and the condensed vapour being returned to the storage tanks. In the event of the pressure in the tank falling below that necessary to. force out the liquid during discharge through a valve duct leading from a sump 28 make-up vapour is added through lines 26, 26a and valves 25, 25a which latter may also serve as vent valves.
