Description
Device for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance of an acclimated space, acclimated space and transport vehicle
The invention relates to a device for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance of 5 an acclimated space, comprising a housing, provided with at least one supply for supplying air from the acclimated space, at least one oblong exit positioned at a distance from the at least one supply and air displacing means for displacing air from the at least one supply through the at least one oblong first exit outside the housing for forming an air-curtain extending substantially in a plane. The invention also relates to an acclimated 10 space. The invention further relates to a transport vehicle.
Air-curtains are used for screening the entrance opening of an acclimated space.
Thereto, an air flow is blown under pressure along the entrance opening of the acclimated space, for example along a door entrance. The local over-pressure created by 15 the air-curtain ensures that no air from outside the space enters through the entrance opening into the acclimated space. As a result, without physically screening the space, such as for example by a door, the risk of unwanted temperature variations of the air inside the acclimated space is decreased. This is advantageous for both persons and/or products within the space, in particular products, which require to be stored within a 20 predetermined temperature range.
Known devices for forming an air-curtain are designed to be compact and comprise a housing provided with at least one oblong exit, a supply directed to the space to be screened and a fan for drawing air through the supply and blowing the air outside the 25 housing through the oblong exit for forming an air-curtain extending substantially in a plane. Averagely, the width of the oblong exit is approximately 10 mm, wherein the thickness of the air-curtain increases with increasing distance from the exit to about 20 - 40 cm nearby the end of the air-curtain.
30 A known example of the use of an air-curtain is to screen the entrance of an acclimated loading or cargo space of a transport vehicle. Depending on the products to be transported and the climate along the transport route, the acclimated loading space is heated by a heating device and/or cooled by an air-conditioning device in case the temperature surrounding the loading space is relatively low and relatively high, 2 respectively. When the entrance door is opened, for example during (partly) loading and unloading the loading space, the air-curtain decreases the risk that air from outside the space enters the loading space. As the air is drawn from the acclimated loading space into the device for forming an air-curtain, the desired air temperature within the loading 5 space can easily be maintained.
Transport vehicles and their loading spaces tend to become larger. Cooling or heating devices for acclimatising the loading space with increased capacity or multiple devices are used to maintain the desired temperature within a preferred range in substantially the 10 whole relatively large loading space. As a result, acclimatising relatively large spaces requires much energy. In case the acclimated space is a loading space of a transport vehicle this leads to increased fuel consumption, which is relatively expensive, environmental unfriendly and leads to a decreased reach of the transport vehicle.
15 It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for forming an air-curtain, which at least partly overcomes the above-mentioned disadvantages.
According to the invention, one of the objects is achieved by a device for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance of an acclimated space, comprising a housing, 20 provided with at least one supply for supplying air from the acclimated space, at least one oblong first exit positioned at a distance from the at least one supply and air displacing means for displacing air from the at least one supply through the at least one oblong first exit outside the housing for forming an air-curtain extending substantially in a plane, wherein the housing is further provided with at least one second exit 25 positioned at a distance from the at least one supply and air displacing means for displacing air from the at least one supply through the at least one second exit outside the housing and out of the plane of the air-curtain. By blowing air outside the housing and out of the plane of the air-curtain, an air flow within the acclimated space is formed, which distributes air through at least a part of the acclimated space. As a result, air 30 temperature variations within the acclimated space are decreased.
The second exit can be positioned in close proximity or even next to the first exit. The first and second exits can even be part of an end of a single passage. A valve positioned at the end of the passage can be directed such that the air flows from the first and/or 3 second exit into the preferred direction. Preferably, the at least one second exit and the at least one oblong first exit are spaced apart. This is advantageous in that the air flowing out of the at least second exit has no or at least a decreased influence on the air-curtain formed by air flowing out from the at least one first exit. As a result, the device 5 is arranged to distribute air within the space leading to decreased temperature variations, without influencing the effect of the air-curtain for screening the entrance opening of the space.
The second exit is positioned and/or directed for blowing air out of plane of the air-10 curtain. The air can be blown outside the housing of the device at a distance from the air-curtain, in parallel direction of the air-curtain. The at least one second exit can for example be positioned at 1,0 meter from the first exit, thereby creating a second air curtain for distributing air within the space. The exit can also be positioned and/or directed such that the air is blown outside the housing of the device under an angle with 15 respect to the air-curtain. Surprisingly, this can lead to a significantly decrease of the variations of the air temperature within the acclimated space. A relatively simple construction is obtained in case the at least one first and second exits are located in first and second wall sections of the housing, which first and second wall sections extend in a mutually substantially perpendicular direction.
20
The device can be designed in various ways. In an embodiment, the air displacing means are located in the at least one supply. This leads to a simple design of the housing, as air displacing means at only one location within the housing can suffice for blowing air through the at least one and first exits outside the housing of the device.
25
To increase the operational flexibility of the device the housing comprises first air displacing means for displacing air through the at least one first exit and second air displacing means for displacing air through the at least one second exit. In this way the air flow through the at least one first and second exits can be controlled independently. 30 A relatively small air flow through the at least one first exit can thus be combined with a relatively high air flow through the at least one second exit.
In another embodiment the housing comprises a first supply in connection with the at least one first exit and a second supply in connection with the at least one second exit.
4
In this way the design of the device can further be improved depending on the specific circumstances. For example, the first supply for the at least one first exit for forming an air-curtain can be positioned and/or directed for supplying air having the temperature of the acclimated space, whereas the second supply can be positioned and/or directed for 5 supplying air having a temperature deviating from the desired temperature, for blowing air towards a device for heating or cooling air. The device for heating or cooling air will the adjust the temperature of the air having a temperature deviating from the desired temperature, which further leads to decreasing the variations of the air temperature within the acclimated space and the device for cooling and/or heating the air consumes 10 less energy, as it will not process air having the desired air temperature or has a temperature close to the desired air temperature.
In yet another embodiment the housing comprises air temperature adjusting means for adjusting the temperature of the air within the housing. In this way the air blown outside 15 the housing through the at least one first and/or second exit has the desired temperature or has a temperature close to the desired temperature of the acclimated space. This is particularly advantageous in relatively large spaces, such as large cargo spaces. A single device for heating and/or cooling the air temperature within the acclimated space may not have a capacity large enough to maintain the air within the acclimated space at the 20 desired temperature or the device has such a large capacity, that other disadvantages may be present, such as an excessive large building volume or an air temperature nearby the exit of the heating and/or cooling device, which significantly deviates from the desired air temperature, to assure a desired temperature within the space remote from the heating and/or cooling device. This particularly holds in case products need to be 25 stored within a certain temperature range, such as vegetables. If such products need to be stored a few degrees above 0° C and the temperature nearby the exit of the heating and/or cooling device is below 0° C, this may decrease the quality of the products or even make the products worthless.
30 The air temperature adjusting means can be designed in various ways. A reliable and energy efficient heating means for heating the air comprise a holder for a liquid medium and heating means for heating the medium. In case it is desired to cool the air within the housing, the temperature adjusting means are designed to cool the air, such as an air conditioner.
5
Although it is not excluded that the air with an adjusted air temperature is blown outside the housing through the second or both the first and/or second exit, the air temperature adjusting means and / or the housing are preferably arranged for displacing air with an 5 adjusted temperature from the at least one supply through the at least one oblong first exit outside the housing for forming an air-curtain extending substantially in a plane. In this way a relatively large volume of the acclimated space can be maintained at a desired temperature, as air having the desired air temperature or close to the desired temperature is blown via the air curtain outside the housing into the acclimated space, 10 without the necessity of a separate device for adjusting the air temperature, which also requires air displacing means and thus consumes relatively much energy.
The device according to the invention can be designed with various capacities. Preferably, the air displacing means are arranged for displacing at least 800 cubic 15 meters per hour, preferably at least 1000 cubic meters per hour and most preferably at least 1200 cubic meters per hour through the at least one first and/or second exit. Such devices can advantageously be used in loading spaces for transport vehicles, such as containers for trucks and ships, wherein a sufficiently good air distribution within the space can be obtained, without superfluous energy consumption.
20
Simple and reliable air displacement from the at least one supple through the at least one first and/or second exit can be obtained in case the air displacing means comprise at least one fan.
25 To decrease the distortion of the air flow for forming the air-curtain, the at least one first and/or second exit is located at a distance of at least 1,0 meter from the at least one supply. To further decrease the distortion of the air-curtain, the housing is provided with at least two spaced apart first and/or second supplies. The supplies can be located at sides of the housing, preferably in a substantial parallel manner or substantially in one 30 line.
In yet another embodiment the at least two supplies are located in mutually movable wall sections of the housing for adjusting the distance between the supplies. This allows the device to be installed and to efficiently operate in spaces with various dimensions.
6
The invention also provides an acclimated space provided with a device according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one first exit is directed for screening the entrance opening of the acclimated space and wherein the at least one second exit 5 has a gradient parallel to a wall section of the acclimated space. The advantages of the acclimated space according correspond to the above-mentioned advantages relating to the device for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance of an acclimated space according to the invention.
10 In an embodiment the at least one first exit extends substantially along the ceiling of the acclimated space. This can lead to significant decrease of temperature variations within the acclimated space.
The invention further provides a transport vehicle provided with an acclimated loading 15 space having an entrance opening, wherein the acclimated space is provided with a device for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance opening of the acclimated space according to the invention. Particularly in case of transport vehicles the invention can be advantageously used. Using the device for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance opening of the acclimated loading space of a transport vehicle leads to a 20 more energy efficient way of acclimatizing a loading or cargo space, which leads to a decrease of fuel during operation. The use of fuel is relatively expensive, environmental unfriendly and leads to a decreased reach of the transport vehicle. The transport vehicle can be a car, truck, train, ship or even an aircraft for transporting products, such as food, or persons.
25
In a first embodiment the device is located at a distance from the entrance opening, which leads to a decrease of the distortion of the air-curtain by external factors, such as wind and solar radiation, thereby maintaining the air temperature behind the air-curtain within the acclimated loading space.
30
It is advantageous to the device is located at a distance of at least a fifth and preferably at least a quarter of the height of the entrance opening. Locating the device at such distances from the entrance opening leads to a good screening of the entrance opening and no or only little distortion of the air-curtain by external factors, whereas the volume 7 of the loading space behind the air-curtain within the loading space is limited to a small extend.
In a preferred embodiment the device is positioned at a distance of at least 0,5 meter and 5 preferably at least 0,7 meter from the entrance opening, which leads to minimal distortion of the air-curtain.
In another embodiment the acclimated loading space has a substantially rectangular cross-section, wherein the at least one supply of the device is arranged in an upper 10 comer of the cross section. Such a location of the device takes little of the effective volume of the loading space, wherein the loading or cargo space can be used as efficiently as possible for products and or persons.
The invention will now be further elucidated with reference to the following schematic 15 figures, without however being limited thereto.
Figure 1 schematically shows a perspective view of a device for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance of an acclimated space, comprising a housing according to the invention; 20 Figure 2 shows a cross section of the device of figure 1 through the lines A-A of figure 1; and
Figures 3 and 4 show a transport vehicle wit an acclimated cargo space, provided with a device according to the invention for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance of the acclimated cargo space 1.
25
With reference to figure 1, a device 1 for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance of an acclimated space is shown (see also figures 3 and 4). The device comprises a housing 2, provided with two channels 2a,2b extending in a parallel direction, and a third channel 2c, at a first end of the channels 2a,2b connected to the 30 channels 2a,2b. The third channel 2c extends in perpendicular direction with respect to the channels 2a,2b. The channel 2c is built from two main parts and an intermediate part 2d. The two main parts of the channel 2c are displaceable within the intermediate part 2d, so that the total length of the channel 2c is adjustable. This allows adjusting the width of the housing 2, so that the housing 2 can be positioned in spaces with varying 8 dimensions. At the respective ends of the channel 2c the housing 2 comprises fixation elements 2e for fixating the housing 2 to wall sections of the space wherein the device 1 is to be located. At the bottom sides of the channels 2a,2b, the channels 2a,2b of the housing 2 are provided with a supply 3a,3b, respectively, for supplying air from an 5 acclimated space into the housing 2. At the bottom sides of the channel 2c,2d, the channel 2c is provided with an oblong first exit 4, at a distance A of 1 meter from the supplies 3a,3b. The oblong first exit 4 extends along the length of the channel 2c and has a width of 10 mm. The housing 2 also comprise a first fan (see figure 2) for displacing air from the supplies 3 a,3b through the at least one oblong first exit 4 outside 10 the housing 2 for forming an air-curtain extending substantially in a plane (see also figures 3 and 4). At second ends of the channels 2a,2b the channels 2a,2b are provided with second exits 5a,5b, which are located at a distance B of 1 meter from the supplies 3a,3b. Nearby the second exits 5a,5b second, fans are located within the channels 2a,2b (see figure 2) for displacing air from the supplies 3a,3b through the second exits 5a,5b 15 outside the housing 2 in a direction perpendicular to the air-curtain (see also figures 3 and 4). The oblong first exit 4 is located in a bottom wall section of the channel 2c and second exits 5a,5b are located a side wall section wall of the channels 2a,2b, which wall sections extend in a mutually substantially perpendicular direction. The fans comprise an electric motor (not shown) for driving the blades of the fans, which electric motors 20 are connectable to a source of electric energy, for example to AC or a battery. The electric motors, fans and the housing 2 are arranged for displacing a total of at least 1200 cubic meters per hour through the first oblong exit 4 and the second exits 5a,5b.
With reference to figure 2, a cross section of the device 1 of figure 1 along the lines A-25 A of figure 1 is shown. During operation, air is drawn from an acclimated space 20 through the supply 3 a into the housing 2 according to arrows 8. The airflow inside the housing 2 is divided into a first part drawn towards the first oblong exit 4 due to the action of the fan 6, according to arrows 9, and a second part is drawn towards the second exit 5a due to the action of fan 7, according to arrows 11. The first part of the air 30 flows is blown outside housing 2 through the first oblong exit 4, according to arrows 10, thereby forming an air curtain (see figure 3). The second part of the air flows is blown outside housing 2 through second exit 5a,5b, according to arrows 12, thereby distributing air within the acclimated space 20 (see figure 3). As a result of the air 9 blown outside the housing 2 according to arrows 12 variations of the air temperature within the acclimated space 20 are decreased.
With reference to figures 3 and 4, a truck 30 is shown. The truck 30 is located in a 5 relatively hot environment with an air temperature of approximately 28°C. The truck 30 is provided with an acclimated loading or cargo space 20, having a rectangular cross-section with a height H of 2.8 meters and an entrance opening 21. Cargo spaces with heights less than or more than 2.8meters are also common. Within the acclimated cargo space 20 products 22 are positioned, which need to be stored at a relatively cold 10 temperature of approximately 8° C. At the front 20a of the acclimated cargo space 20 an air conditioner 23 is located, which cools air from outside the cargo space 20 to below 8° C and blows the cooled air into the space 20 according to arrows 13. As a result, the temperature within the cargo space 20 is maintained at a preferred air temperature of approximately 8° C. At the ceiling 20a of the acclimated loading space 20 and at a 15 distance C of 0.7 meters from the entrance opening 21, the acclimated loading space 20 is provided with a device 1 for forming an air-curtain for screening the entrance opening 21 of the acclimated loading space 20 according to the invention. The air conditioner 23 and the device 1 are connected to the batteries (not shown) of the truck 30 and the truck 30 comprises a control (not shown), which control comprises a display indicating 20 several parameters, such as air temperature, humidity etc. at different locations within the cargo space 20. The cargo space 20 thereto comprises several detection means 25 for detecting the temperature, air flow, humidity, which are in communication with the control. The control can be used from the cabin 30a of the truck 30 by the driver.
25 During transport, the entrance 21 is closed by doors 24. When opening the doors 24, for example for (partly) loading or unloading products 22, the outside air having a relatively high air temperature, can enter the cargo space 20. The air-curtain according to arrows 10 prevents the relatively hot air to enter the cargo space 20. In addition, both during transport and during (partly) loading or unloading products 22, air is blown out 30 of second exits 5a,5b of the housing 2 of the device 1, for distributing air within the cargo space 20 according to arrows 12. This additional air distribution leads to a decrease of temperature variations within the cargo space 20. As a result, the risk of unwanted deterioration of products 22 is decreased and/or an air conditioner 23 with smaller capacity can be used, which as a result requires less energy.
