[Also in Division C7] An article bearing a multicoloured picture includes a solid dielectric substrate coated with an at least 500 Š thick film of a unilaterally conducting metal such as tantalum, niobium or titanium or alloy of such metal on which is formed a transparent anodic oxide film which varies in thickness from 100 to 6000 Š at different areas of the film and so exhibits differing interference-colour effects at these areas. Typically, a glass plate is coated with tantalum by sputtering, the coating is divided into separate image areas by chemical etching along outlines defined by a photo-resist image technique, the resist is removed, and the separate tantalum areas are independently anodized with different applied voltages to produce the differing thicknesses of oxide layer (see Division C7). The article may be a badge, jewellery, an instrument part, a decorative panel or an imitation stained glass panel.
