913,995. Pictures. KAHN, D. March 24, 1959, No. 10091/59. Class 11. A mono-coloured or multi-coloured picture for viewing by reflected light comprises a base member 21 having a metallic reflecting surface 22 and an assembly of two or more translucent and identical pictures superposed in registering relationship with an intervening transparent separating layer 27 between each two successive pictures, said assembly being applied to the reflecting surface of the base member. The base member may be formed from glass, ceramic, paper, leather or textile material and a metallic sheet glued or cemented to the base member or the base member coated with a reflecting layer by a vacuum metallizing process. Alternatively, the base member is formed from sheet metal, a separate reflecting layer not being necessary. Each picture comprises four superposed ink layers 23-26 and 28-31, the inks forming the layers 23-26 being more translucent than those forming the layers 28-31, and is produced by a photogravure method. Parts of the picture may be emphasized by applying transparent refractive layers or opaque layers to the corresponding parts of the reflecting surface. Alternatively, a reflecting surface is applied to certain parts of the base member only. The spacing layer 27 and a transparent covering surface 32 consist of a coating of varnish or lacquer or are formed from plastics material. The base member and reflecting surface may be embossed to obtain a three-dimensional effect.
